I know that 4ftx2ft is the bare minimum for 2guinea pigs. Then ive been told if its boars then min should be 5x2ft for a pair.

So realistically could I have a 3sows or a (neutered) boar and 2 sows, happily, in a 6ftx2ft hutch?

6ft x 2ft is OK for 3 - and I can highly recommend a neutered boar / sow combo

6ft x 2ft is the RSPCA guideline for 4 sows though it is always better if you can offer more space :)

why don't you put a double decker cage on top of each other so they have a ladder to go up to top cage and down ladder to bottom cage !, then they get plenty of exercise as well

Cages with ramps actually take away space and piggies are not natural climbers and many don't like ramps therefore wont use them. A lot of ramps in hutches are too steep but can be customised.

Ideally to give maximum space the area should be flat. Always go for a cage as big as you can accommodate x

Thanks everyone. Sorry I've took so long to reply.

Just found this link too - Cage Size Guide
Cannot believe that I missed that! I spent ages googling but just kept getting up the minimum for 2pigs.

So it says that RSPCA gives this advice: 4 guinea pigs 2x6 ft (180x60 cm) or 12 ft square .... recommended for 2 boars or 3 sows or 1 neutered boar/2 sows.

So I'd be offering above RSPCA minimum if I have a trio. That's made me really happy:D . I didn't know if I was being unrealistic in wanting to get a trio.

The hutch in question is actually a two storey 6x2ft that we already own. We are removing the ramp and purchasing a trap door to turn it into 2 seperate hutches. This after a tragedy we had last year with our rabbits.

My ramp was adapted - it had high sides to prevent bunny falling off the side and had extra grip bars to normal for added grip. Last summer our bonded pair started fighting horrifically (a very small wildie had got into the garden under fence - that's the only trigger we can come up with). So any way we hear all this commotion, go outside find them figthing like crazy, fur flying every where. As we approched we saw Poppy slip at a slight angle on the top of the ramp, as they were fighting. We managed to grab a bunny each. When we checked them over it was clear that poppy had severely broken her leg - we don't know for sure it was on the ramp, but it seems the most likely. Unfortunately she passed away during the complicated op to repair the damage.

This event left us somewhat traumatised. We couldn't bring ourselves to get a new companion for remaining bunny Burt, but knew it was not fair on him. We talked to the rescue who took him back and rehomed him with a new companion, with-in a week. We miss him dearly but even now a complete year later we are a little worried about getting another pair. But we both agreed we would never have a ramp in a hutch again. So we are splitting it in two. Hubbys said hes happy for me to put piggies on top floor and we are going to keep the bottom hutch empty, until we decide on more rabbits or not.

What a sad story and something I will have to think about this before I finally open up my double tier cage I designed it myself so the ramp isn't steep.
I'm just purely opening it as it'll give the pig's more space at the moment they have a 6ft x 2ft with a pair in each which need to be separated. I have always had Trio's and find this size works well.

Can't wait to see your new arrivals.

I find that only Spud will happily go up and down the ramp in the bluebell double hutch I have, ordered a fabric tunnel to see it it encourages Freckles to go down too - but meantime I put freckles on the bottom level in the morning so he has more space to run about - if he ends up not wanting to use the ramp if it has a tunnel I will try to relocated the bedroom to the bottom of the hutch.

I have found having two levels is good in that when Spud gets fed up with Freckles 'mounting' him, he escapes back to the
other level and freckles is too chicken to follow!

Gosh - that is a sad story. I'm so sorry this happened.
