I have finally gotten the C&C built, and the boys are now living together happily :<> So now we went out and got fleece and I was going to make fleece liners and put towels underneath and possibly newspaper too.

I was wondering if 1 or 2 layers would work best?

You need one layer of fleece as it has to be touching sometime absorbent underneath to get the drawing away of pee process going. If you have two layers of fleece the top layer will be touching fleece which wont draw the wee downwards, if that makes sense! Did you mean two layers of fleece, if not ignore that bit!
I use two layers of towels, tea towels or mattress protectors - its pretty much what I had in the box of rags! I found that one layer of good thick towel will work on its own or two layers of thinner towel. Experiment around and if you use newspaper check to see if there are any stains, if there are then add another layer! Good luck and post some piccys of the finished result!

Thank you so much! Yes I was asking about 2 layers of fleece touching, and this clarified the question for me. I now have one liner sewn (bright lime green) and plan on putting that and the towels in tomorrow after I give the boys a bath because Oreo (new boy) has not had a bath since I have had him and was pretty greasy when I got him, and Vinny just has a stinky butt:(|) So they will be getting their bath together tomorrow and get the lovely surprise of fleece when the get back to their cage:<> I will post pics for you dont worry I love taking pics of my animals:))

I use 2 towels or a fleece under and towel topping.. so 2 layers.. but I keep the towel on top :) absorbs better.

If you just use one layer of fleece on top of Huggies bed mats you won't need to faff about with newspaper and towels - the mats are on half price offer just now at Tesco £2.39 for 7 mats. About 5 or 6 weeks supply even if your cage is large and you need to use 2 mats to cover the floor area

Just wanted to check, so you have cage bottom, bed liner and then 1 fleece on top?

I'm getting my 1st piggies soon and am grabbing tips from everyone! I like the idea of fleece rather than shavings or a hay bottom.

Well - I don't even have a cage bottom (yet) It is still in the shed. I have our piggies in the kitchen (not quite as unhygenic as it might sound as it's a big kitchen and the piggies are nowhere near the food prep or human eating area)

So - literally all I have is the bed mats (2 side by side) directly on top of the kitchen floor (I can't recall what floor is made of but it's almost like a resin which looks like stone tiles but isn't - it's waterproof anyway)

Then on top of the mats is one fleece blanket. That is it! Nothing gets through those bed mats to the kitchen floor - they are brilliant! I do take it all out and give it a good mopping with boliling hot water and disinfectant once a week but there's no smell or anything.

I am going to use my correx though and build a 2nd story

Ps - I remember you are getting your piggies for your son's birthday - these piggies of 'mine' were for my 5 year old daughter but I have totally taken over! She is still really interested in them and loves Stan (on left of my avatar) best of all as he is really cuddly but she doesn't get much of a look in as I have taken over - might even get some more for myself next year!

Yes 'they're for my little boy' yeah right they are totally for me!

I am so excited, it's ridiculous. Now I've got the cage it's real. I've bene to the rescue once, but didn't want to get attached in case they got rehomed. I'm going to leave it a few more weeks and then go back and pick some.

Thanks for the fleece advice, I really like the idea of using fleece rather than shavings.

Oooo sounds like me.
2 years ago I got 2 piggies for my daughter (she has now lost interest grr) meanwhile I got 2, then 2 more, then rehomed one from a work colleague, and them one more to even things up.
So now I (note the I) have 2 herds of 4. They call me the mad guinea pig woman. I am at my happiest in their shed pottering about cleaning and cuddling etc. always looking out for things to make it nice in there for them. Cork board with pics etc, bunting, lovely new fleece, name plaques, a radio and a light. Heater for when its cold. x)

Ha ha ha "the mad guinea pig women"!

I'm planning on 2, but if the rescue has 3 living together already then I obviously couldn't split them up...:)
