Well this morning i have woken up to two very grumpy piggies who appear to have both woken up on the wrong side of the igloo and decided on starting World War 3!

My two boys, Bentley and Chester have been fighting all morning, since my boyfriend woke up at about 5:30am, we tried at first just to put two smaller igloos in as we only had the one big one where Bentley could still hump Chester which is the part causing the most arguments rolleyes but that didn’t seem to work, so i took Bentley out on the bed in the hopes that would help him calm down but he was trying to nibble at me and wouldn’t sit still so i put him back and for a few seconds we had peace until it all started again.

Bentley and Chester have lived together for over 2 years, i got them as babies, September 2011, and they’ve never had any big arguments like this that have lasted more than half an hour or so.

I’ve had to separate their cage in to two 2x2 cages with an igloo each which seems to have settled everything, although i think Chester misses Bentley as he just wont stay still for very long, where as Bentley is happily sleeping in the corner. Chester usually just gives in to Bentley though but it just seems as if he had enough this morning as he would only settle for so much and then just rear up after a few of Bentleys love hugs. And it’s probably the first time in my life i’ve heard Chester teeth chatter, he’s usually such a quiet boy.

How long should i keep them separated? It’s so upsetting seeing them both apart!

Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated, i’m thinking of giving them their fresh morning hay when i do let them back together as that should keep them occupied for a moment before they start the fights.

Just an update, i put the pigs on the floor together to see if being somewhere other than their cage would help and Bentley was really not leaving Chester alone, and he wasn’t mounting he was properly humping, and then he just stopped and a big lump of what i’m assuming is guinea pig love juice came out ? and now they’re happily side by side like nothing happened no more humping no more rumbling just happiness... what just happened ?! mallethead

Boys and hormones... I hope that it will last!

As to your original question: if necessary, you can give them a day/night out and a bath before re-introducing them on neutral ground. Ideally also clean the cage (including all furnishings) in order to remove the stink of excessive testosterone from there as well to avoid riling them up again. Boar pee is laden with hormones and it gets liberally sprayed everywhere when boys are on the rampage.
