How Long Should A Bag Of Fitch Last With Four Pigs?

Hello all,

I've got four young sows living in an enclosure about 11 or 12 square feet in total.

How long would you expect a bag of fitch to last me?

I ask because me and the missus seem to be getting through an entire bag every couple of weeks (if not sooner), and I'm getting the impression from reading these forums that it ought to last us a bit longer than that. Maybe we're being a bit too fastidious!

I think it depends on your cage and your guinea pigs, in total I've got about 20sq ft I use fitch in, with a further 2ft hay loft where they spend most of their time. Because of this and that they tend to toilet in the same corners I can usually get away with cleaning them out less often if I keep up with just changing the soiled bits. If I can tell they haven't used the basement or loft at all I don't change it. All in, the bag of fitch usually lasts me about 2months. I did find when I had them in a standard 120 cage that it was impossible to spot clean and they needed changing a lot more frequently so I just bed them on hay for those few weeks to save the fitch.
