My girl, Nutmeg has had Pneumonia for the last week or so. She's been on Baytril, and the wheezing is gone, but she still is finding it an effort to breathe.
I took her back to the vets today and she's on a higher and longer course of Baytril. If that doesn't help we're on to x-rays.
Anyone had experiences of long lasting pneumonia? Did your piggie survive?

One of my piggies has chronic respiratory disease and is prone to upper respiratory infections (although it has never progressed to pneumonia). She generally has 3-4 weeks of baytril before the infection clears so I'd imagine pneumonia will take a bit longer to recover from.

As long as she is improving and heading in the right direction then it's just a case of being patient. I hope she feels better soon.

I know a few members who’ve successful nursed piggies through pneumonia. If the Baytril is not having effect, you need to make another appointment with your vet to discuss alternative antibiotics. I’ve found Azithromycin to be most effective with respiratory issues.
It may also be worth discussing nebulisation with your vet. My vets used to ask me to sit my boy in a steamy bathroom for fifteen minutes each evening after showers.

Are you also support feeding and weighing daily?

I second the nebuliser. I bought one for around £40 off amazon and made a chamber out of a storage box. You can even nebulise some antibiotics which makes it easier to administer. Happy to post pics if anyone is interested in the set up.

Our piggy Blodwen had pneumonia caused by chlamydia bacteria, and this was diagnosed by a specialist vet who prescribed doxycycline, after several months of baytril then sulfatrim never quite clearing things up, she had xrays and a specialist referral.
She is now fine but occasionally still has wheezy days when she gets symptom relief medicines- pneumonia can leave the lungs scarred and prone to other infections and just inflammation and irritation some days on hot dry days or cold damp days.
Nebulising as mentioned is a good option, there are also things for symptom relief- bisolvon powder sprinkled on food is a good decongestant for helping on wheezy days, frusol diuretic can help clear fluid from the lungs, loxicom/metacam can reduce inflammation.
Speak to your vet, pneumonia can be treated effectively though finding the right antibiotic for the bacteria causing it can be tricky- doxycycline for example isnt widely prescibed and it completely wiped out Blodwen's appetite and gut bacteria and she needed intensive support feeding and probiotics while taking it- and a lot depends on the piggy, how robust they are generally.
Our Blodwen is a chubby little fighter who after 8 months of various vets and treatments is just fine now except an occasional wheezy couple of days when a bit of symptom relief sorts things out for her.
Healing wheeks for your piggy, there may be a bit of trial and error finding an antibiotic that works, xrays are a good idea to get a look at the lungs, but there are also many symptom relief options available from the vet to explore to keep them breathing comfortably while the underlying cause is treated! She's eating fine and the vet weighed her and her weight is the same as before the infection.

I would weigh her daily, particularly whilst she’s on antibiotics. Step in with support feeding where required, as any antibiotic treatment can upset the balance with the gut

:agr:
While she is unwell its best to weigh her daily yourself so you can be sure she really is eating enough. It will enable you to step in with syringe feeding and take further action much sooner if the antibiotics do upset her
