Hey guys. My IC piggy has recently been started on cartrophen injections, she’s had one dose so far and has her next coming up on Monday. Just looking to hear people’s experiences on how long it has taken to show an improvement with their piggies? Thanks 😊

We did an injection weekly for the first 4 weeks and then monthly after that, personally I noticed improvement by the 3rd weekly injection apart from my boy who was getting them for severely arthritic knees..his improvement was a lot quicker. But usually by the end of the weekly injections they (the ones getting them for IC) had almost all stopped squeaking. I did have one who, after the weekly injections had to have one on week 3 instead of waiting the month, but after that, she was fine monthly.

It did help I think that my vet showed me how to do them myself at home, so they didn't have the stress of going to the vet every time which may have sped up the effectiveness of the injections.

That sounds promising then! I knew it wouldn’t be an instant fix but she’s been struggling with it for so long and I just really want to get on top of it asap for her. I had also thought of asking about doing the injections at home as it is about an hour round trip for us. I’m type 1 diabetic and do multiple injections on myself daily so I’m no stranger to needles but I had read that Guinea pigs skin is quite thick. How did you find doing them?

It actually wasn't too bad, they've got a thick fatty pad on their "scruff" so as long as you avoid the worst of that, it's fairly easy, especially if you're given the dose in an insulin needle. It just takes a bit of practice to get used to it vs human skin as yeah, it is a bit thicker.

Yeah I’m sure I’d manage once I got used to it. Fingers crossed we start to see some improvement over the next couple of weeks! Thanks so much for your reply 😊
