When I had just the two pigs I used to clean the cage once a week and it worked a treat. However, now the two babies are a few weeks old the cage is starting to smell after just a few days. :( Bedding I am using is Carefresh/Megazorb.

I've not the time to clean it more often so I am trying to think of ways to get round the problem. Atm the minute only thing I can think of is getting rid of a couple of pigs - after all I had never planned to keep all four. Something needs to be done.

Are you using just carefresh/megazorb? what is underneath it? Also if it is still smelling with new bedding try scrubbing the plastic down with vinegar (not sure what type) diluted in water which apparently helps get rid of any smell

Its white vinegar you're thinking of

News paper is underneath - put it to try and stop the Megazorb/Carefresh pilling up when then run their circuits. I clean the cage out throughly when I change the bedding - it's just now I've fours pigs there is twice as much wee/poo which I think is making it smell after a few days.:(

how big is the cage?

smaller cage need cleaning out more often.

have you thought about a different bedding?

with any bedding you really need to clean them out twice a week to stop them starting to smell.

white vinegar is good though helps neutralise the smells

How can you think of getting rid of some of your guinea pigs just because the c and c cage smells? When you have more then two piggies you have to clean their home more often. That is all. You cannot seriously want to get rid of them for such a petty reason. Dont you love them? I have five piggies. I use towels and two layers of fleece. I do a poop collection two or three times a day and change the fleece and towels every three days.

Agreeing with piggyfan, they're naturally just going to need more cleaning. I have 4 boys , two 5x2 c&c cages and clean them out every 3-4 days, I use newspaper, towels then a fleece doubled up. The newspaper us always very damp but the fleece is always dry so this works for me :)

I feel sorry for you, I hope an answer turns up. No-one can imagine the work that's involved in caring for these animals, that's why only the most dedicated can do the job properly. :)p

Of course that's not the only reason. It is just one of many.

Someone is going to be looking after my pigs for me whilst I am working away and I wanted to see if I can tackle this problem of the smell before I leave.

Basically I didn't buy these pigs - I was just kind enough to give them a home (a palace at that). When I took them it was just two - little did I realise one was pregnant.

I've looked after them the best I can - they've had the life of riley. But with me working away - two will be more manageable. But I haven't made my mind up yet. Wanted to see how it goes - hence trying to tackle the smell. I use carefresh atm but also with some megazorb. Don't thing the megazorb is helping matters to be honest as it hums a bit. But it was just costing too much using Carefresh only. I am thinking of giving Aubiose a go.

Add a layer of wood pellets under the carefresh. They control odor very well.
Since your walls are higher, it might be the ventilation issue.
Not sure if you have enough grids to overlap them to baby proof the cage.
If you do, overlap the grids so the spacing between the bars are smaller, then cut the walls down for better ventilation.

Had the window open today which has helped. There is a vent on the window as well which I'll open. I have also moved all the hay off the floor as that wasn't helping. I also think the megazorb is contributing - but I've bought the stuff now.grrrr

Do you scoop out the wet areas everyday? That would help too. Also an air purifier/cleaner would really help.
