can you give me some ideas on haw to keep a bale of hay tidy please?

is there a bag big enough out there to take a bale of hay?

where would i get it from?

once the strings are cut i don't want it going everywhere whats the best

way to keep it please?

I use an old single duvet cover. It is the perfect size and I bring it to the farm with me and put the bale in it before putting it in the boot of my car. It then gets stored in my electric cupboard!

I have baby bales delivered in hessian sacks which makes life so much easier :) I reuse the sacks as bases for rugs, wallhangings or other sewing projects so they don't get wasted!

I also make Hay Duffles for Hammocky Hammocks (not in the Hammocky Hammocks shop yet but will be later in the year) for people who request them but they are easily made yourself if you have access to a sewing machine.

Just remember to make sure the fabric you use is natural and breathable, cotton drill being a good sturdy option :)

you can get plastic bags big enough to take a full size hay bale, all i do then is cut the strings at the top and take what i need for the next few days, fold the bag back down and it stays nice and fresh.

If you are struggling to get a bag big enough let me know and when i get a spare i will post it to you.

Does the hay not "sweat" in a plastic bag?

it's only wrapped up whilst transported from the farm to home, it then goes in the shed and i open the top part up so it can breathe, never had sweaty hay

i was wondering that myself but we buy it in plastic bags from the pet shops,

any hay i have ever bought has come in plastic bags.

even pet super stores like pets @ home sell it in plastic bags.

A lot of the hay that is easily bought in small amounts almost always comes in plastic bags and I always remove it asap and put it into a breathable bag of some sort and as already mentioned a duvet cover or a canvas bag is perfect for this.

Despite being a Farmers daughter and remembering they joy of Hay baling, we moved away before I was old enough to fully appreciate the process, however my Dad goes purple every time he sees a delivery of hay in a plastic bag!

Plastic is by far the cheapest and easiest way to transport and store hay but it doesn't mean it's the best way.

Here's a handy link and extract from the site.

Do: Store the hay in a well ventalated dry storage area. This could be
indoors or outdoors, in garages and the like, and even in apartment
sheds (like the one off my back patio.) It's fine to be exposed to
humidity as long as it's well ventalated (remember the barn analogy?)

Don't: Store the hay in plastic. Plastic draws moisture which causes
mold and rot. Plastic could be a garbage bag or even a trash bin with
or without a lid. He said don't use either. Also, if you buy hay from
pet stores in those plastic bags, get it out of there into a wooden or
cardboard box- something that breathes.
I will say that if you buy 'posh' hay in small amounts and use it within a few days of delivery (Burns Oat Hay for example) then it's not such a worry, but if I was buying by the [farm] bale then I certainly wouldn't entertain storing it in plastic in any form.

took the words out of my mouth, leave a breathing hole at the top of the bag,my piggies have always had hay this way and several are verging on being oap's before long so its never done them any harm, stored in a cool place keeps it just fine.As long as you just keep taking a few days worth at a time the hay below stays fresh and ready for the next load.

Hi Tab,pleased the girls are getting along nicely,i can imagine what those two turned out like, very hairy indeed.I will send the next bag i use from the wood shavings to you,its plenty big enough.

I used to store my hay bale in a large builders bag that was great. Then when we had the piggy extension built my other half made me a hay box so now i go to the stack yard to collect a bale which i bring home in the back of the car inside an old quilt cover.

Then it goes in my hay box pictured below.

The box has no bottom in it so it easily moves out to sweep up the last bits of hay before i put a new one in.

I love the way it's labelled 'hay' :))
