For the last few months, I've been researching Guinea Pigs and decided that I think I can handle and be responsible for a pair of Guineas. However, my parents don't thinks so. They believe that if I get a pair of Guineas, they will just sit in their cage and be bored and lonely. But, I don't think this is true. They will have chew toys, little shelters, me and, of course, each other! I know, most of the responses are going to be how I should just deal with it, but I will literally do whatever I can, to get a pair:). What did you do, or how do you think I can convince my parents I can handle two piggies and not let them become bored? I earn $70 per week for nannying and have saved up $300 so far, I'm sure this is enough for a while (or at least thats what I think after doing all the research). Please respond! And be kind while doing it:lol:!

I really have no idea how you can convince your parents to be honest. How would you go about giving them floor time and time in the garden ?

I have a large outdoor pen , so they would definitely have a large space to run around on nice days!

Well done on doing your research :)

As you're still a minor, the piggies will legally be your parent's responsibility, so you may just have to accept their decision. I know it's tough. I nagged my parents for years for a dog, but they said no. We eventually did get one just before I turned 18.

Could you possibly volunteer at a local animal or guinea pig rescue? That way you could still get to spend time with some lovely animals. You could also sponsor a guinea pig? Many rescues will send you pictures of your sponsor pig, and sometimes even updates.

Maybe write up a budget plan (start up costs, cost per month, etc.) and a daily schedule of what you'd be doing. Once I showed my parents waaayyy back in the day that I had thought it through and did some planning and wasn't trying to get something on a whim they leaned more towards saying yes.

Could you start with supporting a local guinea pig rescue or shelter to show your commitment? You can continue to save up for a vet cost fund, as ill piggies can run up pretty high bills (several hundred of dollars for a life saving operation), and that is where teenagers usually REALLY run into trouble with parents that are unwilling or simply can afford to pay that kind of money.

Surely, this kind of commitment will prove to your parents that your wish for guinea pigs is not just a fancy.

you are also welcome to learn as much as possible about guinea pigs as a member of this forum.

Best of luck with convincing the parents, when I was younger I always nagged for pets from a very young age, finally when I was about 13 I was finally allowed 1 hamster and that was it lol

I know exactly how you feel I have been wanting guinea pigs for 5 years and only yesterday my dad said yes only if I pay out of my own money I have 89 pound so far only 72 to go all I did was loads of research and I mean weeks of research and you need to do a lot off online shopping looking for different prices of things oh and a hint that I have found is that pets at home hutches are way expensive so I go on amazon and look not only that runs eg. Also don't just get food or toys and that just from pets at home go and look around your nearest pet shop or supermarket for food and toys then add it all up also monthly costs daily routines and what are you going to do if you go on holiday I've done all that here are some helpful websites oh and don't forget to do the dishes and help out a lot and a also if you do get piggies continue doing the dishes and that or wise they might think next time
Basic Needs

Basic Guinea Pig Care
In my new home I will need:-
  • A hutch and run if I am to be outside.
  • A cage if I am to be living indoors and an outside run for my exercise.
  • A water bottle.
  • A heavy food bowl as I like to stand on my bowl and don’t want it tipping over.
  • A dustpan and brush so you can clean me out.
  • Toys for me to play with like:-
    • Tunnels for me to hide in.
    • Balls with bells inside so I can throw it around.
    • Chew sticks for me to nibble on to help my teeth.
I regularly need:
  • Lots of newspaper for the bottom of my hutch.
  • Dust extracted wood shavings (because the dust irritates my eyes).
  • Hay (NOT straw).
  • I have been fed on ‘Pets at Home’ Guinea Pig Nuggets. If you would like me to eat something else please introduce it gradually as I can get an upset tummy if its is done too quickly.
I cannot produce my own vitamin C and will get ill without it, so I will also need:
  • A constant supply of fresh water every day with vitamin C drops (or powder)
  • A regular (preferably daily) portion of fruit and vegetables including:
    • Broccoli
    • Peppers
    • Bananas
    • Honeydew melon
    • Carrots
    • Cucumber
    • Fresh grass (not cuttings)
  • NO potatoes, they make me very ill
Also why not do a PowerPoint on reasons why you should get piggies eg. Your responsible you have enough money and what problems you have eg. Vet bills and also how to over come the problems oh and don't forget to throw in facts cute photos and how animals are important for children eg. To have here are some websites
