How can you tell when they are 'purring'?

Threepigs

I'm struggling to tell the difference between our guinea-pigs purring when they are being petted and trembling when they are scared.

When we get them out they do treble, but with noisy little boys around, it is difficult to tell whether it is scared trembling or contentment at being stroked.

Thank you.

Guineas can use the same sound to mean different things. If it's a louder, more aggresive rumble then they might be trying to tell you that they don't like something. If it's a more 'cooey' kind of noise then they're having a good time!

If they're new to your home, or young piggies, then i'd expect them to shake or tremble a little as they're getting used to their surroundings. As usual, all pigs have their own personalities, but the more they get used to their surroundings the more they're likely to open up and talk to you. Usually it will be in response to being stroked, or perhaps hearing a new sound, but you'll recognize it when it happens. You'll also recognize the rumbles and squeaks they make when telling each other who's boss!
