Hi,

We currently have a group of 7 guinea pigs (6 girls and a neutered boar). We having been looking at C&C set ups and am tempted to have a go. I would love to make it as big as possible but would be interested to know what people thought would be the minimum size.

Thank you

Using http://www.guineapigcages.com/ as a guide, I'd suggest a minimum of 5x3 but preferably 6x3 in grids (7.5'x3.5'), the former would give you 20ftsq and the latter would give you 24.5ftsq of space. I've based this on adding on 2.5sqft for each additional pig to a 7.5 square ft min for two, the preferred size is based on adding 3sqft per additional pig.

Thank you

I have been looking on Ebay and there is a seller who has for sale 6*2 and a loft of 2*2 for £40 (no correx). I though this may be way to small but it not that far short of the 6*3. I think I will have a good look at what space we have and see what fits before making a final decision.

Thanks again

I agree with Hermes. I used to go on the guinea pig cages forum and when I was considering going to a 3 grid wide cage, a lot of people recommended keeping it longer and narrower rather than going wider as it remained easier to clean (their opinion anyway). If you chose to do this, I'd say 2x9. So it'd be pretty long!
Just another option but due to the length of that one Hermes' suggestion of having a 3 grid wide cage would be better. To be honest I'd want to go for a 3x7 if I had the space, just my view. I know somebody that has that for 5 piggies :)
I think everyone has slightly different ideas and views but you can use guineapigcages.com as a guide.

Thank you

I'd consider taking the loft off and adding it to the bottom level - 2x2 will be a little bit cramped for 7 pigs and you're better off having plenty of floor space where they can all run around and get away from each other when they need to. To be honest they're very cheap to put together yourself if you look in the right places, if you wanted to do that. My cage has cost me about £30, fleece and all, including the grids. You can get correx free from estate agents, they use it to make their signs, so you can tape them together then make your base as you would normally. Saves some money :) My one is a 2x4 with a 1x2 loft, for 2 pigs, as a rough idea on money. Includes fleece, the grids, correx, some fleece I bought for making things and then food bowls and all the basics. I've added new toys since then but they don't count as my original set up fee :p

Thank you so much for your input. I was thinking more the pieces from the one on ebay and then adding some more to make it bigger. I will measure up tomorrow and see what we can do. If its not big enough to take something that is big enough to make them happy then we won't do it.

I'm sure you can sort something out :) C&C cages are lots of fun. You could have a look on youtube to get ideas too :)

Thank you all.

The one on Amazon is actually the same seller but its free postage with Amazon. Thank you - definitely one to watch if we go ahead. x

I personally prefers it wider because they can do their popcorning better :P

My four are in a 4x4 c&c and I find it easier to clean - I just step into the cage! I put all their houses etc in the centre of the cage and leave them with a runway round the outside for zooming, they seem pretty happy with it. Fits much better in my lounge than a longer narrower cage.
