So... I had a woman have a go at me on Facebook for having my gps primarily and only in a hutch for now and I take care of them to the best of my ability, am I wrong to let them live in a hutch until I am able to give them the indoor space they need?

Everyone just has to do the best they can when they first get piggies, until they figure out what will work best ling term- mine are split between 3 temporary cages until I get them bonded and in their new C&C. Until it gets cold (or unless its too hot!) they should be fine in a hutch I think.

Once you get them inside it's great. We all chat to mine when we pass. I would have thought until you can get them indoors, that hutch looks fine to me. When it gets hot wrap up frozen bottles of water or ice blocks, the heat is awful at the moment, don't worry about other people, if you're looking after them what's it's got to do with other people.

1. No you are not wrong - she is. No one has the right to have a go at you just because you do something that they don't agree with. I've faced it from people but the important thing is that your guinea pigs are well cared for, loved and healthy.

My pigs live in a similar hutch to Betsy and they are outdoors year round. They have tons of hay, an insulating layer and a weatherproof layer. I spend time with them everyday and ensure I clean them whatever the weather. Today I have spent an hour outdoors in the pouring rain sorting out the hutch and talking to them. When its really cold weather I have the option of moving them into the garage to help protect them. As long as their needs come first, over and above you not wanting to go out in the wet/cold/wind/snow then you are doing right by them

I honestly think hutches can be better than indoor cages and certainly require the owner to do a lot more checks on their piggies. Plus hutches are brought inside or fully insulated in winter, they also provide the best fresh air but the best thing is that they are huge and in the garden they take up no space at all. I've seen worse examples of indoor cages such as ones literally with the TV on top of the DIY cage blasting into the poor piggies cage or where there is a smoker in the house. Both indoor and outdoor can be fantastic or problematic if you set the cage up wrong. If you give your piggy love, space and meet all his or her needs then that is all that matters, but if you feel your piggy is outside and neglected then that is a different matter.

i agree with the above.i have 4 big hutches outside with covers, live out all year round.i love it in spring and summer as i spend alot of time in the garden.i have same hutches as @Betsy
