Hello :)

I haven't been on here in a looong time, have been a serial lurker though :)

I have decided against getting guinea pigs as I don't feel that they are the right animals for me...my friend has a pair of sows, they are cute but not for me :red...I decided to get another bunny instead :)

My friend is looking to get a cage for the piggies...they're so expensive though...I suggested making a basic c&c cage/ pen for now and see how it goes...I have a few spare panels to make up a 3x2 or 4x2 pen.

Question is...is a pen 14" high suitable for piggies? would they be able to get out if it was just open top?

What do you guys use to line the pen? does fleecing get pulled/ dug up too easily?

Thank you :)

Hi SianD,

First have a good nose through our housing section of other members C&C this will give you some good ideas

A 4 grid by 2 grid size for 2 female pigs is fine too, and I have never had problems with piggies getting out of my open top cages. Just use normal precautions of keepng high beds or boxes away from the very edge if you are concerned

This site gives you lots of information of C&C

And the 'how to make' page

If you buy a sheet of correx this can be made into a waterproof box shaped base, as shown on above link.

With regards to fleece, I have never had a problem with pigs diggy in fleece as they would much rather forage around in the hay. :)
Under the fleece needs to be some sort of 'soak-away' some people used towels, washable or dispoable bed pads, or a cage liner that can be made or bought- a forum member makes these
