I love my c & c cage, but there is nowhere for 2 different ones to go, I did think it would be fine but I am inheriting 2 cockatiels tomorrow (from a friend who has lost interest because they talk to much rolleyes ) and Neil is getting sick of animals everywhere and has suggested putting the trio outside.

Now in theory its not a problem, we would get a big hutch, hutch hugger etc and bring them in every night to play, but I would feel guilty as it means they wont get as much attention (the kids love them but they arnt going to go outside all the time when we have 2 indoors, plus I cant get out in the garden all the time as I have demonic toddler, obviously he can come out with me on nice days, but on not so nice days it would be hard)

I have shown him c&c cages where cages are on top of each other to house more then one group, I suggested this but he dont think he can do it, hes worried about it not being secure enough, I suggested maybe a sheet of plywood between the 2 which would solve his worries, but hes worried about access and ease of cleaning, he worries having an opening front would weaken it, plus he would want 2 floors for each group.

So I need to know exactly how you guys get into yours and how you did it, I have read all the posts on making them but cant see anything that clearly says.

Also another idea is make something with wood, but what wood would we need? Anyone got any tips?

I do see his point, my toy room is looking over crowded, I was hoping for a couple of rats too but I think I need to stop now and sort out what we have got properly! The room is there if we get creative, but we are not creative people, please help I dont want any animals having to go outside and if he put one lot out the other would have to go out to to make it fair 8...

you can always bring hubby to our house (cause you are only down the road) to have a look at our 2 layer c&c and talk to my hubby about how we did it. It is just basically grids on top and then a perspex lining, but you are more than welcome to have a look xx

Thank you both, I will show him both those links, I will ask him if he wants to see yours to Jo, thank you. Hopefully something will work so they can all stay inside xx

How about this? I used to have my cage stacked on top of each other. I have 2 boys in each cage.

When I moved to a bigger place I change the legs and made it into L-shape though.

The frames are solid kiln-dried pine. The floors are plywood lined with vinyl flooring. The front is plexiglass ( perspex )

Here's a step-by-step building guide. My cage is 8 feet by 28 inches but the guide was written for someone who asked me to draw 6 feet cage.

wow that is amazing, if supermums hubby is a bit of a handyman then that would be a great idea xx

Oh I like that too, I will show him that! I hope he will at least try it, I'm not bothered if its not perfect as long as its safe lol x

Since you have a toddler, would he bother the pigs who live in the bottom cage? You might need to have some kind of lid or door for the bottom cage. The top cage would be too high for him to reach.

PS. I built the whole thing by myself. My husband didn't even help. It's not that hard to build. I had a lumber yard cut all the wood for me.

well done you, i could never do anything like that. B&Q do a wood cutting service, so maybe that would help you out a bit, and there are loads of timber yards around Coventry too xx

Yeah I have demonic toddler lol, tbh he could get in the c&c if he really wanted but he hasnt, the only time he bothers them is if they are silly enough to be at the side where he can reach over, but tbh he tries to stroke them rather then hurt them, he can be a little grabby in the process but hes gotten alot better with them so I think he would be ok, we are considering allowing him time in the play pen with them (and an adult) to see if he will sit with them nicely, only major issue is he is obsessed with feeding them, except he likes to throw the veggies at them grrr. (luckily for the piggies he is a rubbish shot lol)

Was the wood and perspex expensive? I know I wouldnt be able to do that on my own (I made a birdhouse at school and lets just say what I finished up with didnt look much like a birdhouse, I also attempted a decorating course when the girls were little and failed that misurably as well :red)

The cage costs me about $200 US dollar. It's a lot more expensive than C&C.
Part of the cost went to bolts. The bolts I used were very thick. I'm not really a wood worker so the things I bought were probably overkill. The cage could support my weight.
The bolts costs about $70.

Thats cool, I will get him hunting parts, he has agreed to try so with a little luck they will be able to go in one soon, also I have 2 old wardrobes so he is going to see his dad about helping convert those. I dont know how well that would work guess we will soon see lol xx
