Ok, feel free to lambaste me for a stupid question if it deserves it!

Do pigs and hot water bottles mix? Obviously the hot water bottle in question would be thoroughly wrapped up/insulated and secure from nibblers and bare piggy feet...

I know you can buy heat pads but they're quite expensive and my boys don't really need the extra warmth being indoor piglets but I was just thinking it might be something nice for them to have during their floor time.

?/

I've only ever given a hot water bottle to a poorly piggy and I wrapped it in a bath towel, he appreciated it and flopped on it. I wouldn't give one to a healthy pig especially the ones I've got now, they'd definitely find a way to eat it.

I'd just make them little warm dens, a cardboard box stuffed with hay or a blanket. If they're racing around chances are they'll get warm enough.

I have an elderly pig who has a hot water bottle most nights during the winter. I've custom-made a piggy-proof cover out of a few layers of fleece and lots of velcro. It even confuses my OH when he tries to get it out :) My piggy LOVES to stretch out on it. I find him on it even when it's cool in the morning - must be like a giant water bed :)

If it's just for floor time, as Shaz says, I bet they're racing around so much they'll be warm in no time!

Lol I used to give my oldie a bottle under all the bedding, wrapped up in towels etc & don't use boiling water rolleyes

She used to bounce on it where she could feel it wobbling about underneath her lol :))

Thanks both!

I only ask as the pigs get the whole conservatory for their floor time and we usually have them out for as long as possible so they're not running all the time (I think they're quite lazy to be honest as they do more flopping around in their tents/dens out there than running!). They never feel, seem or look cold but the whole 'water-bed' idea appealed to me!

I am wondering this too as I am worried about my girls tonight. They are in the room with me and I have the heating on but you never know if they may be cold. Should I give them a hot water bottle wrapped in fleece or is that dangerous? I have no money to get snuggle pads until next month which is a real shame.

i watch a few animal rescue programes and they sometimes have hot water bottle wrapped up heavily in towels, 'cause the heat will still reach them, I'm considering when my pigs come out for a cuddle heating up one for them :)

I am just worried they *** find a way of burrowing in the towel and get burned.

Wouldn't do any harm if they're supervised with it. The only time I've ever used a snugglesafe or similar with my pigs is when they're unwell. I do offer Cameo one after she's had a bath, but she generally ignores it (I quite often find a certain pig sitting on it instead though!) :))

Thanks. I was going to give them one now and I am going to bed so do you think I should wait until tomorrow?

Thanks for asking this, I had wondered about this for when I give the piggies a bath (I have never done it before!) and I wouldnt want them to get cold! I was thinking give them floor time in the front room where there is an electric fire so it can be kept cosy

Maybe if you used two smaller towels so they could be wrapped one length and one widthways, lesson the amount of gaps, then wrap there fleece into a cuddle cup or turban as i like to call it and let them sit in, I'm sure they'd relax sounds like something i'd like even if the pigs don't ! :L

How'd you get on?

Since asking I've had a hot water bottle on my lap (for me incidentally!) covered by their petting blankets for lap time and they haven't seemed to mind/notice/take much interest!

I did not do it as I was too worried! I will try tonight when I am up to watch.
