Jynx has always softly "hooted" and "coughed" to some degree, and she's also always been my chattiest piglet! There's never been anything of concern to make me think she's needed a vet visit, and I'm only posting up about it now because I've finally managed to capture her noises on camera - although still not the cough/choke.

Soft hooting:

Choking with heaving (hidden by log hidey):

Jynx heaving:

In the one above, I think she's just got something stuck and is trying to remove it. I've included this one to show her body movement from the second video.

Is this hooting something I should have checked out? It's not constant nor all the time, and so it's difficult to take her to a vet when she won't demonstrate the behaviour in that setting, which is why I think she's just chatting - but would like other's thoughts. 🙂

With the cough/choke, I think she may simply be eating too fast on occasion, but other times the "choke/cough" seems random.

Any ideas?

Hallo :) She sounds so much like Cleewee with those noises (also a big gobby piglet!), normally at the start of one of her hooty, honking episodes, when I can tell she’s going to start and get in with the metacam and bisolven quick! The last video with the coughing/heaving/lunging is definitely just like her, but Jasper does it occasionally when he forgets to chew as well! 😆
Lolo also has a habit of making squeaky noises while she eats similar to the first one too just to scare me (get off Jynxy’s celery Mr Chonky! :))), pigs!
Cleo’s issues we’ve put down to hay dust irritating her etc, and obviously she only has the one type of hay (orchard grass from timothy hay.co.uk!) or she can get terrible! Her chest’s been clear every vet trip we’ve been to too (lost count how many that is since she arrived! 🙄:)))!
I’d probably try and get her in for a check if you’re worried, it might be that she might need a bit of metacam as she’s getting a bit irritated etc, or obviously it could be something else completely and you can ignore my rambling! 😆

A pic of the sharky hoover murdering her prey for you :):))

My Ginger can be a bit Hooty too. Had everything checked at the C&R last year and Kim thinks it’s because she has very narrow nasal passages but couldn’t find anything else. Just inflammation caused by dust. She’s never snotty just hoots sometimes. Ginger is a Chonky piggie at 1280 plus
Hoping lovely Jnyx is ok though x

My Gibson hooted his entire life, checked multiple times and nothing was ever found/diagnosed.. Absolutely worth getting it checked out, just to be sure, but I think some piggies are just noisy! Gibson's hoot progressed to a more 'crunchy' noise in older age, but again, nothing was found!

The heaving both of my short-haired boys have done - Higgins regularly after dinner and I saw Kingsley doing it two days ago, but it was in between zoomies/popcorns so I think he had a bit of indigestion..!

You could always book an appointment to get her checked over and show the vets these videos. I’ve done that in the past where the problem has been intermittent and not demonstrated at the appointment.

She sounds very like other piggies I’ve had with narrow airways who hoot a bit after being in hay and choke after scoffing food too quickly, but you never can tell so if your instinct is to get her checked by the vet, then ask the vet to check her over (and the videos) to reassure you
