Last Wednesday (14th), I woke up and Luna was making a strange hooting sound. I immediately called the vet and got her in for that afternoon. By the time I brought her to the vet, the hooting sound had stopped. The vet still listened to her lungs and hearts and said that everything sounded ok. She was worried about her bladder being tender, so we got x-rays. The x-rays showed clear lungs, a barely enlarged heart (which is the same as it was 18 months ago, so that’s good), and a small calcium deposit in her bladder. It’s not actually a kidney stone yet, but because her sister had just been put on antibiotics for a urinary infection, the vet decided to put Luna on some too to try to prevent anything worse.
This past Wednesday (the 21st) Luna started making the hooting sound again, but it went away by mid afternoon. Now today (Friday) it’s started up again (as seen in the video). It’s not as consistent as this video may make it seem; it took a while to actually get it caught on film.
So after the first episode, her lungs and heart were cleared of having complications. The most recent bag of hay we bought was mostly brown, so I’m wondering if it’s just suuuuper dusty, and that’s affecting her? If it is, besides buying new hay, how can I help her? Or is the hay not the issue at all? I don’t want to overreact considering the vet just cleared her, but up until 9 days ago, she had never made this sound.

I've had a hooting sound with one of my gals too! It wasn't as bad but it happened to her because of dusty hay. I'd recommend either getting her another bag of hay or smacking the dust out of the amount you have right now.

It can be scary, but as long as your vet is cavvy savvy, I'd trust what they say! It doesn't sound like it would be anything other than a URI/respiratory disease. Seems like it's more of a hay thing. Good luck with your girl, she's a cutie patootie :D
