Hi,

Penny has been hooting off and on for over 24 hours now. She has history of hooting once in a while, but it's just for a little bit until she eventually coughs and it goes away.
I'm really kicking myself for not calling the vet this morning and now they're closed until Monday. Penny was not hooting this morning so I thought she was back to normal. But after I got home this afternoon I noticed she was doing it again.
I'll probably just call the vet and hope a small animal vet is on call, but does anyone have advice? I have meloxicam and cisapride, would either of those help her? Other than the hooting, Penny is totally fine. She's eating, drinking, and active.

Listen to her chest - is the noise coming from there or does it sound like it’s more from her nose?
Its not definitive but if you can hear noises in her nose then often it’s hay dust which can be sneezed out in time. Clicky or raspy sounds in the chest are more likely to be indicative of a respiratory infection.
Only the vet can diagnose what is actually going on though but that is a rough guide.
If hooting is lasting longer than a few hours then it’s always best to consult a vet.

We would never advise you to medicate without vets approval.
(Meloxicam is a pain killer; cisapride is a gut stimulant.)

Update:
I took Penny to the vet not too long after I had posted this. Luckily the on call vet was the small animal vet we usually see so that was a relief! The vet said Penny's lungs sounded fine but gave her doxycycline (I think I spelled that right?) in case the hooting continues. Luckily (knock on wood), Penny hasn't hooted ever since we were at the vet. I will continue to keep an eye on her!
