Hello:)

I bought my guinea pig (Buzz) from pets at home on 08/03/2020. I noticed in the car on the way home that he had a clear drip from his nose and his chest sounded like a clicking/hooting noise. I rang pets at home the following day to inform them of this, they agreed to treat him at their vets for pets store for free. I was given a course of antibiotics ( Enrocare) and pain relief (Metacam) and was told that he had possible allergies and or bacterial infection and that I should keep him off wood shavings and put hay into a rack. After the course of antibiotics was over the clicking and snot came back. Buzz has now been on 4 different antibiotics to try different ones and every time he is taken off them the same symptoms come back. His eating/drinking and faeces have always been normal but he is lethargic and barely moves around his cage. I have a nebuliser I use to help him breathe but this only helps a little bit. I wondered if there was anybody out there who has ever had this problem and knows how to manage/solve the problem? I’ve spent over £3000 on vet bills since March. I just want my boy better😔

Has he been seen by any other vet practise during this time?

Medical issues always need to be dealt with first before looking to other factors, but
what is he bedded on?
have you tried using a different hay brand?

Does he live alone?
Have you been weighing him routinely each week?

Yes he has seen 3 different vets, he is now with a small animal specialist.

what is he bedded on? He’s on puppy pads
have you tried using a different hay brand?
Tried 3 different hays, pets at home, B&M and now he’s eating a local farms hay.
Does he live alone? He lives with a younger boar
Have you been weighing him routinely each week? Yes he is staying at 1444g
And what are the antibiotics he has been given?
He’s been given Enrocare, Baytril, Zithromax, doxycycline.
he’s also been on Frusol which helps the fluid in his chest.

Enrocare/baytril is the same thing - active ingredient is enrofloxacin

Ok. A culture would be my next step, but also as I’ve asked in previous posts, have you tried a different hay brand? What is he bedded on? Does he live with another guinea pig?
