I’m thinking of building a huge structure for my animals and future animals out of wood ((I’m not 100% sure if I’m gonna use hardwood plywood or like 2x4s but all the wood that will be on the inside will be covered in either tiles or like acrylic or glass))

Which of my design ms do you think I should go with more? And what’s a good wood to go with I’m in the US so I’ve got hardware stores all over the place

HI I would go with bottom design as Guinea pigs need a lot of room, I would also go with acrylic rather than anything else.

I would put the acrylic over the wood and partly up the sides as it would be easier to clean. You will need plenty of air circulation for your Guinea pigs hamster etc... So they don't develop health problems.

Is it going to be standing or down flat? I’d go for the design with the bigger space for the guinea pigs (bottom). Would the back be solid? I’d do something in terms of ventilation.

As for the wood, sorry but not a clue. Maybe look through the homemade cages and see what everyone else used.

Ok so acrylic instead of tiles but what should I put on the top half of the wood? And at the very least the fronts of the cages will be meshed with like the bottom foot of the cage covered so bedding will stay in the cage and I might also mesh the sides the same way on the guinea pig section and maybe I’ll move the hamster cage to the side and mesh one side as well as the front

It’s gonna be standing up and I plan to mesh atleast the front if not more with like the bottom foot of the cages solid so I can put plenty of bedding

Looking forwards to seeing the finished result
Thanks I’m looking forward to it too and with how big I’m gonna be making the guinea pig area ((24square feet)) I’ll be able to adopt a bunch of piggies from my local shelters like 5 or 6 if I remember correctly

So far I’ve narrowed it down to either aspen, poplar, oak or a mix of the 3 with either tiles covering the bottom half of each cage cause they’ll be more scratch resistant than acrylic and I can use petsafe silicon to fill the gaps and 1/4 inch metal mesh

I would put your storage at the bottom - purely for ease of cleaning out the guinea pig section!

I’ve got it up top cause it’ll mainly be Knick knacks and small stuff plus the piggies will be able to make their own way out of the cage themselves for playtime when the doors open
Maybe I’ll raise them up like a foot though and build a ramp cause I might build the storage section open topped or just do a foot high storage section and put stuff on top too lol

aww i see - that makes sense - just from my own opinion i could not bend down to the floor to clean it out lol! Its going to be an epic build!

Thanks yeah I can not wait to start building it! Though it’ll probably be a month or 2 before I even start getting the supplies for the build
