Hullo!
I have decided my tubby piggies have out grown their 2-tier hutch, but I can't afford a new one at the moment.
Are they easy to build? And what equiptemnt would i need? I had a look on the tinternet, but wasen't very helpful...
Thanks!

Hi

I built two hutchs from recycled wood that IKEA had thrown out and the total cost was £8!

They sit inside an avairy I built for my rabbits so they don't get wet and are protected from the elements.

You could use them outside if you felted the roof and covered them with a tarp.

I made them in an afternoon with just a screw driver and a saw. They are basically made out of spare wardrobe parts so laminated chipboard. I just measured out a back, top and bottom and 2 sides and then built a wooden fram for the front to hang my doors on. I put lino in the bottom. The top one houses my piggies and the bottom one houses the rabbits. I need to make some doors for the rabbit's hutch for the winter.

If you need any further help, let me know!

we built our hutches as it would have been way too expensive to buy what i wanted. it was really was quite easy to do it. we purchased plywood for the sides, roof and floors. we made the legs etc from 2" x 2" wood, and we used roofing lathe for the doors. then we bougth some mesh. here are some photos showing different steps on how we made them. hope it helps.
this is the back. screw the legs on to ply wood and screw the cross beamd on http://
do the same with the sides but you only need to screw one leg on as you with then screw the side to the back via the leg on the back section.

when you have added both sides, screw the front cross beams into place.

more to follow...

you can now screw the floors and roof in place. use more ply wood.

http://
now add the doors. measure the door size and using the roofing lathe, screw the pieces together then add the mesh (we did this using a staple gun).
attatch to hutch using your hinges. use ply wood for the sleeping area doors.

hope these give you an idea as to how to build a hutch. mine is 8' x 5' x 2' and is actually 4 hutches in 1. this cost just over £100 but would have cost a lot more if purchased form a shop. it is also a lot stronger.

I love those little curtains you made on the hutch! So cute! I'm going to have to copy you! lol x>>

Oh, wow! :o
I'm gunna get my step-dad to make both. ;)
Could you put a PVC mat on the bottom, to stop the plywood from getting soggy?
Thanks. :)

i've lined mine with correx, then use vetbed for the bedding. you could always paint it with wood stain that is suitable for use with animals. it will help waterproof the wood.
