Home made accessories - is this ok?

Hi :)p

This is my first post on here, Hi everyone.

I was wondering what home made accessories you have for your guinea pigs?

Also is it ok to use plastic ice cream tubs as home made tunnels or is it dangerous to them if they chew and eat it?

I'm just getting the cage ready for when I get my pigs at the end of the month.

Hi there. I would not use plastic tubs. You can use cardboard boxes,cardboard rolls and paper bags.
 
Some of the toys piggies love most are home made ! (:

I'd be a little unsure about plastic tubs as the sides may be quite sharp however cardboard boxes are an endless supply of guinea pig toys, if you go to a local shop they sometimes give boxes for free if you ask and you can make tunnels, hidey houses, whatever you want !

Another thing you can use is toilet roll tubes, cut a slit down the side so no piggy head gets stuck and fill with hay, an interesting toy ! or you can hang toilet roll tubes along some rope or string and stuff them with hay gets the piggies working more for there feed.

Piggies also love running about in paper bags, which can have hay put in them or just leave them empty as somewhere for your piggies to sleep (:

Please do not use plastic ice cream tubs. My girls love cardboard toilet roll tubes stuffed with hay as well as cardboard boxes and paper bags.

Those plastic step stools you can buy make ideally hidy houses too :)
 
I will occasionally pop a small plastic tub, like a washed margarine container, into the cage for a day or two. It's not for tunnelling and I don't cut any pieces off it as the edges can be sharp. It's just in there for Machu to throw around and headbutt as he LOVES doing that, and he does it with his litter tray if I don't give him an alternative! Yech! He doesn't chew on it but if he did I'd take it straight out.
