Has anyone had a hoarse guinea pig before? Jynx seems to have problems wheeking! When she goes to squeak, the high-pitched notes come out a bit voiceless. She's constantly making bubbling sounds and gentle squeaks, but she doesn't wheek constantly. In fact, it's Jasmine leading the cacophony these days!

In case it's related, I do hear Jynx honk / cough / sneeze once in a while, although not often enough to make me concerned because she's always made these noises. She just makes them a lot more frequent than I've ever heard Jasmine or Leo do it.

Can anyone shed some light? Should I be concerned? She's otherwise perfectly happy and doing normal things like making grumpy sounds at Leo. :D I've been to the vet so many times since December that I feel like a hypochondriac on my guineas' behalf.

What age is Jynx? Mine have lost their voice when elderly, with good days and bad days. I pretend they've still wheeked and tell them food is coming 😊

Merab lost her wheek as she got older. We got a loud whisper from her when she wanted veggies.
There was never anything wrong, she just lost her voice!

As Jynx is so young it might be worth ruling any medical issue out.
Hope it’s nothing more than a worn out Wheek.

One of my sows - Mya - has developed a hoarse wheek of the last year or so, but she’s so much healthier now than she’s been in a long time ( she was spayed earlier this year and has improved in leaps and bounds since). Delilah, my oldest sow, has never had a wheek at all! I think it’s just as they get older their voice diminishes (my 86 year old mum has the same problem!) but if you’re worried have her checked by a gp savvy vet.

I've had several piggies lose their wheek over the years. Usually it's after a respiratory infection or respiratory irritation. Some piggies have narrower airways than others so are more prone to irritation (such as after diving into the hay). But if you are concerned about her coughing and loss of wheek perhaps a vet check may be a good idea?

Jynx does love to dive into the hay an awful lot! It's the next best thing after the hammock!

I was just searching this board and it’s really put my mind at ease and took away my on edge feeling. My Eowyn has lost her wheek. It is now like a humming noise at most that she can muster. But it doesn’t take away her appetite, or activity level. She’s doing great but hasn’t been able to wheek since June. Bless her heart she still is happy and can vocalize some noises. This forum is great.

My Ted always had a “reedy” wheek 👍

Merab lost her wheek as she grew older.
It was more of a whisper but just occasionally she surprised herself with a proper wheek
