Hi...

Often when I go into our girls room of an evening, or throughout the day if the weather's kept them in, to check water, top up hay, or give them their veggies, they seem to get very excited and both start running around and coming up to the cage door squeaking excitedly, demanding food - however, in between the excited squeaks, Betty does this odd sort of hiss thing - where she seems to inhale and then blow the air out through her lips/teeth? It's not a hiss as such, it's more a.... wheeze with a squeak on the end. A bit like if you puff your cheeks out and do a long whistle...?

Have tried googling this to find out what she's "saying" but all I can find is that she's scared or angry or about to start a fight?!
This doesnt seem to match the excitement of the squeaking and coming up to door and sticking her head right out to take food from me - she shows no sign of fear at all.
Does anyone know what I mean? I've tried filming it but haven't been able to catch her doing it yet.
She's our old one, at 4-5 if age makes a difference..?

She may be trying to do the really loud squeak, which they do with their mouth open - normal squeaks they do without opening their mouths - and not quite making it. One of mine has this problem; when they are both calling for food, Bandit squeaks properly but Smokey does this hissing-squeak thing. And yet he can do all the other kinds of squeak fine, it's just the loud call that he can't manage.

I'm not sure if this helps at all, but do you mean chirping?

There's a video on YouTube of a guinea pig making a chirping noise, but darnitt... I can't find it just now..
