I had 2 boars who had lived together since they were babies. 2 weeks ago I lost Gilbert and Herbie was left alone. I had heard that bonding adult boars was difficult so thought I would see how he got on on his own. He seems to have lost his lust for life and doesn't wheek at me anymore :(

I adopted another boar today from the RSPCA and have currently got them together in a play pen. There is alot of chattering and rumbling going on. Herbie is mainly in his pigloo, and Benji (new piggie) is sitting outside. Is this ok?

hi welcome to the forum. Well done for getting him a friend :) the chattering is normal. Do you have another pigloo? its good to have an equal amount of everything so they wont fight over things. If not i would get one or take the other one out and use something else. Sorry i cant help more. someone else will have more advice for you :) x

Welcome to the forum. This is a really useful thread about 'boar' behaviour which might help

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=28949

A certain amount of chasing / humping / chattering is 'normal' when introducing boars. How old are they? Usually an older boar with a very young boar is the best chance of a succesful bonding, but I've had boars of all ages at mine that have bonded ok.

I have just popped another pigloo in. My original piggie is 4 and the new one is about 1. Thanks for the welcome! x

Hope it goes well for you! it can work and often does so be brave but firm, try not to get anxious about the chattering/rumbling/mounting and scenting smells :)>>>
Make sure their home is disinfected to rid the smell of the original boar as that was his territory and give them a hidey house each, separate food bowls etc

Good luck!

Well they are in a clean hutch now. The behaviour is the same. The new piggie seems to be very dominant. My Herbie seems afraid. I am just wrried Benji will keep him away from the food?

You really need two of everything - food bowls etc - so that they can't fight over resources. If they are getting territorial about the pigloos I would remove them completely.

They will have to sort it out amongst themselves who is 'boss' but once they've sorted this it should be ok. Some pigs never sort it (too closely matched in temperament!) but most do. As long as they are not launching at each other, hackles raised etc. then I'd stick with it. If you take one out, it will start from square one next time you re-introduce them. Best to let them ride it out if you can!

I agree! they should decide who is boss soon enough. Do check carefully for any wounds from possible fights though for a while until they settle :)

No wounds thank god... they aren't launching at each other or anything. Herbie was pressed up against the front of the cage earlier, while Benji sniffed him. Poor Herbie looked terrified and my instinct wanted to grtab him out of there, but I left them to it. Right off to put another feed bowl in there now! Thanks guys x

Well things are the same. They are both in their seperate pigloos but are tolerating each other. No violence ?/
