I need some educating please!

My daughter (7) has twisted my arm into getting some guinea pigs.. (secretly i cant wait! :<>

so i have been given a cage today which is a rabbit hutch which had a guinea pig in before. It is a 4-5 foot (havent measured yet) and one storey. I've put it together and its very sturdy! although looks battered :( so can i paint it? if so what with? what do i clean it with? so far i've used a brush and water! looks million times better already but not good enough yet!. also what can i put inside on the floor as its stained and i dont like it! i want our guinea pigs to be warm and snug so need lots of good revamp ideas please :)

also it has a ramp but its knackered! so i was going to make one? any ideas there? or can i buy one? and i read about rabbit hutch holes for ramps being too big? is this right? i'm confused...

i hope you can all educate me in the right way, will be a while til i have the piggies at this rate! i have a lot to learn lol

many thanks

First things first, I'm a little confused, is this a wooden hutch or a plastic cage? Because the advice will be different :)

Generally, the best thing you can do is have a wonder around the forum, look at the stickys in each section to help you decide what bedding to use, what food to feed, etc etc :)

Oh, and ofcourse, please rescue piggies dont buy them! Pet shops and breeders often sell sick, miss sexed or pregnant animals. None of those issues with rescues :)

hi connie, its a wooden hutch. can i paint it with non toxic paint on the outside? and its really smelly! so what do i use to clean it thoroughly? disenfectant?

i will have a good read up tomorrow thank you

and i'm definately adopting from a rescue place near me :) just need to get set up read, seems so complicated! lol

thanks very much thats really helped! i'm off to wilko's in a min so i can get creative on their new home! i'll take photos for you all to see and advise me on :)

i'm going to do the fleece ting lol so may need advice on that too!

i'm very excited... more than my children :(|):(|):(|)

I'm excited for you, too! Just as well you are, as you'll probably be doing all the cleaning out! And well done for doing all that research! :)

i've contacted a lady who runs a rescue centre for guineas and she's meeting me and my children tomorrow with some guinea pigs to talk to my daughter about them (and me lol) very excited!

off guinea pig shopping now! ^)^)
