I’m sure you recognize the user, my son still has questions so he had me make an account until he turned 18 he just couldn’t wait for two years! He wanted to know about the size of his guinea pigs poop. It got skinny instead of being wider as normal. He also tried to feed it cilantro today as he told me he had been suggested, however his guinea pig didn’t seem to like it and he was wondering what veggies to feed picky pigs?

Hello and welcome (back) to the forum. I’m pleased you’ve made an account on your son’s behalf. As you can appreciate it’s to keep minors safe.

The daily veggies I feed my two are cilantro, bell peppers, cucumber, lettuce mix (not iceburg). Then extras if I have them would be a green bean or occasionally corn on the cob, basil, mint. Very, very occasionally I will give them a grape or a small piece or carrot or a small piece of apple.

Pea flakes are a nice treat. Just a couple a day.

Hay, hay and more hay is what they really need. And only 1 tablespoon of guinea pig nuggets a day each.

I’ll see if I can find the feeding guide and attach it.

Also poops can vary in size and shape. I only worry if they get really small or if they get very soft. Otherwise it’s fine.

It’s fine for you as an adult to have an account. Do just ensure he does not know the password so cannot gain access directly. We have to keep the forum compliant with UK law.

When it comes to trying new things it can take multiple attempts, so keep trying. Like humans though, some things they just won’t like!

The other issue is that guinea pigs learn what is safe from each other. I understand this piggy is alone and always has been so he may simply never have learnt how to try things.
Once he gets a friend things may improve particularly if the new piggy has always been around others so has the social skills to help your current pig.

Please do read the diet guides linked in above. Hay is their main food source, with one cup of veg per day and just one tablespoon of pellets per day.

The weekly routine weight checks are important to ensure your piggy(s) are eating enough hay.
As long as poops are well formed and weight is going up while he is young then don’t worry. If poops get smaller (ie smaller in all directions) or soft then it’s likely a hay intake issue through illness; or in the case of soft poops a digestive upset often due to too much veg . Weight checks need to be increased and ver care sought in this case.
