So I had a wake up call from Jessica sometime between 3 and 3:30am Sunday morning. She did what she normally does, toddlers straight back to bed and went back to sleep. I on the other hand had been asleep since 7:30/8pm ish as I felt so sick on Saturday. So I thought I was hungry and got up to make a slice of toast at which point I realised quickly I was in labour.

The husband quickly bundled the dog in the car to my mum's and got working on setting up the birth pool. The midwives arrived within half an hour and let me crack on with just keeping a close eye on me from the living room door and the occasional temperature and baby heart beat checks. 7am shift change came and Jessica woke up, hubby was going to drop her at my mum's but was warned that he would miss the birth if he tried.

7:16am our little boy, Martin, was welcomed into the world by me, my husband, Jessica and 5(!) midwives (the two from the night shift wanted to witness the birth and there was also a 2nd year student witnessing her first home birth). I don't mean to brag but I absolutely bossed that birth with barely using any gas and air and like to think I roared that baby out like a lion (Jessica's telling everyone I quacked like a duck πŸ™„). I still can't believe he's here even if he did keep me waiting til 41+1 weeks

I’m so pleased he’s here and everything went smoothly. How sweet does Jessica look holding her new brother. 😍

He looks a good healthy size.

Congratulations to you all. You are one incredible woman, Kelly, giving birth at home with barely any gas and air. Martin looks absolutely scrumptious. Enjoy your lovely precious family time xx

Well hello little Martin, aren't you a big boy! Congratulations Kelly. You are one amazing lady. Pool births are fantastic, I had pain relief for Son No 2 in the pool and Son No 3 in the pool. How much does baby Martin weigh?

Congratulations! You've done an amazing job, and I can't believe how many people were there for the birth!
I hope you and your family have a lovely time with little Martin and the sleep deprivation doesn't hit you too hard...

Many congratulations and well done on the home birth (from this ex community midwife). All birth is special but something about closing the door on a new family is off the charts. And what a fabulous reminder for the student of how birth can be, and you don’t need the things that go ping for every birth (definitely have a place, but not every birth)

Congratulations
We’ve all been waiting for this lovely moment
Welcome to the World beautiful little Martin ❀️❀️

Many many congratulations to you all. And well done you for home birthing with no pain relief! Don’t worry about the roaring, that’s what you needed to do!

Jessica looks enamoured already ☺️ Enjoy the precious time with your extended family. Welcome Martin, you’re gorgeous!

Thank you all. Martin weighed in at 7lb 9oz so a little chunk heavier than Jessica was.
I didn't like the gas and air this time so used it a few times each contraction to get to the waning stage and then once I knew we hit the "he's coming" stage I just went for it without. I think the biggest difference between the two births was the faith in both my body and my baby to instinctively know what to do and this time I listened.

It's not been completely without drama as I've had a hospital visit for potential haemorrhaging (everything's fine) and Martin has to have another check today to ensure he doesn't need treatment for jaundice but otherwise we are settling well and just trying to get into the swing of things

Feed, feed, feed and if in doubt, feed! That’s the best way to clear jaundice. Essentially he needs to poop it out. Breast milk is a laxative and also the more anyone eats the more they poop (plus all sorts of other clever things about protein binding but the poop thing is the clincher)

Edit - unless levels are excessive, then phototherapy alongside feeding is appropriate.

Yes he's doing plenty of feeding already 🀣 another little milk monster for me. He was right on the line yesterday for the midwife hence she's coming back today. If he's still there or over we will go to the clinic for a blood test to say whether he needs phototherapy, I personally don't think we'll hit that stage

Congratulations on the safe arrival of little Martin. What a gorgeous little chap. Wishing you happy days and sleep ❀️

Congratulations to you all. I'm sure that Jessica will be a fabulous big sister. xx
