New Born Pup
Hi everyone, this is a bit of a doozy. Here is the timeline:
August 2024 - Adopted two 5 female year old pigs through a friend. Health checked by experienced exotic vet. No issues.
End of August 2024 - One passes away suddenly after a stroke; found to have a tumor.
October 2024 - 3 year old female pig friend gotten through a shelter. Quarantined for four weeks and spayed, due to having a calcified fetus stuck in her cervix. Noted dry skin; treated by vet and persisted. Vet finally said it was nothing, and to not worry. Moisturize her occasionally. Stopped after 1 month.
December 2024 - Adopted two more female pigs, a texel and a silkie. Texel is 2 years old, silkie is one and a half. Taken to vet for health checks. Other two females are short hair, one a rex and one an american. Quarantined for two weeks. Introduced, and all four bonded very easily.
January 2025 - Noticed silkie scratching a lot. No skin lesions, dry skin, etc. No missing fur.
End of January, beginning of February 2025 - Silkie is STILL scratching, about every 30 seconds nonstop. Does this for 20 minutes, five ish times a day. I took her to the vet again, vet gave precautionary mite (ivermectin) treatment, could not find a single thing wrong. No weight loss, skin lesions, no flakes, NOTHING.
This past week - Silkie has since lost fur behind the ears. I know there is a bald spot usually there, it has gotten bigger. No red ring, no flakes. Bites at sides until she falls over.
Three days ago - Finding clumps of silkie hair everywhere in pen. Texel scratches, and has red skin near ears and nose, but NO flakes. Rex has extreme flaking, seemingly overnight. Not itching. American has visible thinning patches on sides, but no redness or flakes or anything.
I am at my wit's end with this. The vet gave all of them mite treatment when the silkie got it. Vet has now given me an antifungal shampoo. Problem continues to persist. I assumed ringworm, so I disinfected everything with F10, baths for everyone, etc. All bedding was washed in the hottest water possible, and dried at highest setting. The vet is confused, I am confused. Everyone is eating, drinking, peeing, pooping fine. Activity levels are normal. But they look more raggedy by the day. Daily weigh-ins and skin checks have been happening for two weeks now. I usually groom everyone and weigh every other day, I am doing it daily now due to the rapid progression. Silkie and texel are the only two itching. Other pigs do not. Please send guidance, ideas, etc. I hate to see my babies like this.
