I dont have any guinea pigs yet but I am going to be getting some soon and just want to be totally 'ready' and have all questions answered so I look after them properly.

I have rabbits and use a product called Hemcore on the bottom of their cages,I use this because when I got my bunnies from wood green animal shelter this is what they were using.

I would just like to know if Hemcore would be suitable for the bottom of a guinea pigs indoor cage and run?

If not I would use fleece blankets but as I already have rabbits and have Hemcore then I would use that if possible. It's fairly cheap and after cleaning 2 massive hutches out with it twice a week it still lasts me about 6 months.

Thanks for reading.

oh here is a link in case you dont know what it is
http://www.hemcore.co.uk/bedding.php
I hope that link works!

Hi, doesnt hemcore just absorb wee? meaning that the wee may still be in contact with the piggie?
My preference is Aubiose which is another horsey type product, the bits are really soft and it draws wee down so if you have newspaper underneath, the paper gets wet but the layer of Aubiose doesnt.
Then it would be a good idea to put hay over the top of any bedding.
Are your piggies going to be indoor or outdoor?

I have used hemcore with piggies. The urine does drain through it, so it would not be in contact with them - in fact, I generally put some newspaper under it for absorbion. Supposedly you can get it to absorb by misting it with water, but I never figured that out. I think it is safe enough, but I found it a bit scratchy to handle.

Thank you for both of your replies.
I am going to be having my guinea pigs inside (and outside in the day in good weather)
When I use it in the hutch for my rabbits I put newspaper, then hemcore, then straw, then hay!
But if there is a better product then I'll try that instead. The Aubiose....is that easily available to buy in pet shops? And could I use that for my bunnies too?
It's just that Id rather only have to buy one type of product for both of them as this will save space in my house!
