Please help - urgent!

new to this forum so please help!
had to take my guinea pig to the emergency vets about 20 minutes ago he was quiet, hunched in corner and bleeding a little from his genital area. hes had a couple of odd shaped droppings since Wednesday but still eating and drinking lots until sometime today. vet says it could be some kind of bacterial infection in his colon and is keeping him there to monitor she is going to give him painkillers and antibiotics as well as syringe feeding him. has anyone heard of anything similar and is this the right course of treatment. any help and advice will be really appreciated (I'm terrified thinking of losing him):(

thanks in advance

Hi Matty

I've had a boar who bled from his penis - there was masses of bright red blood in his hutch; so much that i thought something had gotten hold of him - he had a severe UTI (urinary tract infection) after almost 4 weeks of antibiotic he did get better :)

Your vet is doing the best they can for him, keeping him hydrated & eating, he needs to eat to stop his system shutting down. Antibiotics for the likely infection and painkillers to make him comfortable.

Sending him healing wishes xoxo

Sounds like the vet knows what he's doing and he's in a safe place. Hope he gets better soon!

aw I'm so sorry to hear about your piggy. i havent come across this personally myself but your vet is doing the best thing.

hoping he will feel better soon, keep us updated.

got my fingers crossed for peanut, keep us informed , I know it's hard but try not to panic to much he's in the best place he could be x>>

sorry its taken so long had to go straight to work after picking him up from the vets i used last night to take him to my usual vets (was 45 mins late!)
my vets said it could be enteritis and cystitis or kidney stones! he had an x-ray and that didn't show any stones so he's confident that its the first 2 he said a simple course of antibiotics can sort that out hes going to keep him there and take him home tonight with i thought was good of him and he thinks he could come home tomorrow:(|) just hope he picks up and thanks everyone for all your comments xx>>>

It's such a worry for you but it sounds as though he is in good hands.

Let us know how he is tomorrow.

best wishes xx

So it does not seem to be contagious? Anyway, does he need hos pece and quiet now, and do you have the possibility to separate him from the other pigs?
It is so different; sometimes separating them makes things even worse because they feel lonely, sometimes they just want their peace and not be bothered.

will the first vet seems to think it could be contagious but since last diagnosis i haven't asked all my pigs live separate at the moment anyway cos ended up rescuing all at different times but was in the process of bonding peanut with one of the other 2 not in the last couple of weeks though as i have been bonding my bunnys so I'm hoping they will be ok and they cant catch it:(

Ok, if they are separated anyway, then there is no problem!
I think it is so annoying that different vet keep telling us different things! Well of course it is the same with all doctors! :x

well ive picked him up today he seems to have picked up loads:(|) hes eating on his own and squeaking at me again:)) has to go back tomorrow for another set of injections but he seems to be recovering well. but apparently he has really smelly poos lol

Yeah, betty smelly poos than none :-)
Anyway, sounds a lot better now!

It would be very rare for a gp to have a infectious problem in the digestive system.

I would ask the vet to do an x ray or scan to rule out a tumour or renal stones. As another member has said, bleeding from the penis is quite likely to be stones.
On the other hand,it could just be a severe UTI so the antibioctic will not hurt anyway.
I do hope the vet will have better news for you.
