Hello, I recently adopted a Guinea pig. So he coughed a few times(it wasn't all at the same time) and I'm very worried for him. He's also kind of lethargic and once a found him making a bunch of high-pitched sniffing sounds. I'm worried he has pneumonia so I immediately separated him from the other piggies. He doesn't show any other symptoms though... Should I be worried?

While the odd and occasional cough isnt concerning (it can be hay dust in the airways for example), we cannot tell you whether it might be something else. You will need to have a vet check carried out.

If he has been with the other piggies up until now, then there is no point in separating him. If he was to be ill with a contagious illness, then the other piggies have already been exposed to it. Separating them causes stress to them so you would be better to reintroduce him back with his friend.

Okay thank you! I'll try to get him on with the vet!

Hi!

How hot is it where you are?
Hot Weather Management, Heat Strokes and Fly Strike

The odd cough is generally not to worry about, especially if it happens while or shortly after eating rather greedily.

Coughing is also not a symptom that is generally connected with the onset of a respiratory problem; you will see all the other symptoms, like raspy/crackly breathing, heavy breathing, loss of appetite (which can have many different causes) and mucussy eyes etc. before a cough will develop; we see it very rarely on here because most piggies have been seen and are recovering from a respiratory infection before they get to coughing. ;)

However, if you have concerns, please see a vet.
