Hi everyone, I think I am going to go with vet bed. I was wondering if you could give me some advice with usage of this, if never heard of it before joining here:) I have a few questions:-
1)do I put something underneath it? I have a mattress protector- would this do?
2) do I put it in the sleeping area, then cover with hay? I have just bought my babies a hoody bed, do I fill this up with hay too?
3) and finally. (Sorry...) will be moving the girls into the shed, when should I do this?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm a complete newbie:)
Thankyou all in advance! Xx

I use towels under my vet bed. I have my whole cage with vet bed and put hay in a pile for them to eat and play in. You don't need hay in the hideys. If they are open they will be on the vet bed. I have no idea about moving piggies outside as mine are indoors. You could put a little fleece in the bed to wash it if they wee.

Hi I can't answer all of your qus as I don't use vet bed myself (although have been tempted so will be interested to hear how you get on with it).

The ones I can say something on:

I think by hoody bed you mean something which is soft fabric. I wouldn't put hay in that deliberately. The pigs may well drag hay into it and you'll have enough of a job cleaning that when it comes to washing it without putting hay in yourself. Don't be put off using the soft bed though - the piggies will love it!

My personal view in when to move them into the shed is that they need to be in when the temperature is dropping below around 12 degrees centigrade at night. If it is dropping below 15 degrees but more than 12 the. You could just add things to keep them warm in the hutch such as snuggle safe heat pads and cardboard boxes upturned with hay around the outside of them. Lots of threads on here about that sort of thing.

Good luck!

image.webp Thanks everyone, this is a picture of the hoody bed... It just seems a bit big for them to keep warm in... Can I use that shredded paper or "cotton wool" type material in there like you would put in a hamsters bed?

The only thing I would put in the bed is a little fleece. I used to have that bed. Mine liked it. The bedding you described are not suitable for piggies.

:agr: Only thing I'd add is you could fit a snuggle safe heat pad in there too. Are your girls happy to share? You may end up getting another to help keep them warm. It might work out cheaper if you need a second one to get a cosy snuggle sack instead. @gus+walter would you mind posting a picture of a snuggle sack to show what I mean please? (No I'm not on commission!). A snuggle sack would be nice and warm for them.

Mine won't share so in have to make 2 of everything. Come winter, I'll be using doubled insulation to keep them snuggly and warm.

underneath you could use towels, washable bedpads, disposable bedpads, puppy pads. whichever you prefer :)
