Hi there, I have 2 female piggies. 1 is 3 and I'm not sure how old the other is. She was an adult when I got her. She's at least 3. Muffin, my curly, has had soft poo off and on for a few weeks. She seems to be getting better but now Penelope, the older one has full blown diarrhea. They both still act normal and are eating and drinking. I've been giving both metoclopramide and critical care but haven't had any improvement. Is there anything else I can do?

Please take any Guinea pig with soft Poos and diarrhea off any fresh Food asap. See a vet prompty if you are dealing with full-on diarrhea, as well as with ongoing digestive Problems.
Please add probiotics to their Syringe feed to help the guts. Do not re-introduce any veg until the Poos have been normal for at least 48 hours. Then re-introduce any veg in small quantities one by one. Stop as soon as there is another upset and leave that veg out of the diet. Then start again once the Poos have been firm again for at least 1-2 days.

I don't really have anything to add except what is the reason she is on metaclopromide?

Ok, thank you. I'll call the vet today. I didn't even think to not give them their veggies. Where do I get probiotics?

Our vet gave me a big thing of metoclopramide to keep on hand in case of any stomach issues. I thought it would help.

Metaclopromide is a gut stimulant that helps things move through so could mean that her system is working too quickly. You could also try either lowering the dose or stopping it. Check with your vet though.

Pets at home sell a probiotic called Pro C.

Please don't give a pig with diarrohea metacloprimide.. It will make it much worse! It should be used for bloat where there is gas and a lack of movement. Diarrohea is caused when the guys are hyper mobile, so you really don't want to give motility drugs on top of that.

All the best x

All the best!

Just give dry Food (hay) and fibre, like recovery formula and as much water as they want to drink, but never forcing it down their throats. Guinea pigs whose digestive system is out of kilter often crave some very rough, nutritionally poor fibre to help rebalance the System when they are over the crisis, like brown cardboard.

We're home with some baytril. Basically they don't know why they're having issues so they're doing a stool sample. Hopefully these meds help.

If she is on Baytril it could upset her gut so the probiotics will definitely be needed. Give them at least an hour after the Baytril though as they should not be given at the same time. Could you try cutting out the veg before trying the Baytril?

I think you should see a new vet if this doesn't clear, throwing baytril at a pig when they don't know what is wrong is typical for a non piggy savvy vet.

Personally I would give your pig 48 hours off the metacloprimide and veg and see if the stools firm up. The fact you where giving a gut stimulant when they already had over stimulated guts is more than likely the problem (not your fault).

Baytril is harsh on the guts and unless there is a definite cause for concern that there's an infection I.e they have a fever, I wouldn't be giving them baytril as it will more than likely make it worse.

Ofcourse run it past your vet if you think hanging fire with the baytril is sensible. If it was me, I would Stop metacloprimide and veg and get them on some probiotics such as fibreplex or pro-c from pets at home.

The fact this wasn't even offered to you in the first place does show the vet isn't piggy savvy.

All the best x

My guy had full blown runny poo , took him to the vet ( took three times to actually get him well again ) he was given an injection of metacam , antis and fibre plex , keep of veg for a couple of days and he went straight back to normal . When he had this tummy bug he lost weight so had to feed CC every four ish hours to keep his guts moving

Hope this helps
X

I have some bene bac on order that should be here Monday. I'm obviously not giving them the metoclopramide or any veggies even though the vet told me to continue with them. I'm continuing with the critical care. I'm still not seeing any improvement. I'm getting frustrated and don't have another $150 to go to a different vet.

it does take about four days for them to get back to normal (or at least mine did ) ask maybe anot antis and metacam jab? X
