Help with cage liner materials.

I am looking to make some cage liners when I have built my cage. I have a few spare single mattress toppers (only used for a week or so before we changed to memory foam ones), the only thing is that they are the poly cotton ones. Can I use these? If not, how come?
Just wondering as otherwise I will just be throwing the ones we have, so if I can make use of them it'd be great.

Try pouring water on them, see if it soaks in

It's a mattress protector you want, the toppers are sometimes too thick. Something like this, with a 100% cotton top:

I cut mine to fit the correx tray & sewed fleece to the top

I'm wondering about mattress protector too.
I have a tripled fleece blanket with one towel underneath, but as my boys get bigger and are now drinking more, I'm finding the fleece is getting quite damp (I change their bed twice a week).
Is it better than a towel?
