I keep seeing white stuff in my guinea pigs eye and I hear that it’s just the eye cleaning itself and I also heard he could be sick but I don’t know which, most the time it’s worse in one eye than the other but he gets it a lot so I don’t know if it’s just the eye cleaning it’s self. But he’s eating well and seems to be doing good, the photos don’t show it that well but:F7F65796-A9FC-4549-88D2-79E736AEF9B2.webp42A9DD31-73AF-4BBA-85E9-0AF995D3C39C.webpD5AD4BD7-8E7F-42A3-8627-AD9445B0CC40.webp5564120D-3533-4C32-A4BB-98DEC593980E.webp5564120D-3533-4C32-A4BB-98DEC593980E.webpD5AD4BD7-8E7F-42A3-8627-AD9445B0CC40.webp42A9DD31-73AF-4BBA-85E9-0AF995D3C39C.webpF7F65796-A9FC-4549-88D2-79E736AEF9B2.webp

Hi, please if you're concerned take them to a vet...a piggies eyes are very sensitive and if left untreated it can cause a cascade of other issues...and a just incase vet visit is better than ending up in an emergency...we recently had an eye issue with one of our piggies...a hay poke...we removed the hay as told by the vet to do if we could but weren't satisfied that it would solve itself after it was removed...luckily we went as she had a cut on her eye from it where we couldn't see...and if left any longer would result in an eye removal...it could and hopefully is just cleaning fluid, mine go through phases where they for some reason don't clean it all off and I have to clean their faces...but its worth a just incase visit as it could also not even be the eye that is causing it...

Hi

Please have your piggy vet checked in case it is ulceration gunk and not cleaning fluid that has not been fully reabsorbed.
Ulceration is from a infection due to a scratch or hay poke. Keep in mind that your piggy could have a scratchy bit of hay firmly stuck under lid.

You will require a hands-on vet examination because I can't tell for sure what it is. Eye injuries and infections deteriorate very quickly and are therefore prioritised by UK vets.

Ok thank you guys It will cost 100$ for a illness check so I wanted to make sure and see if it’s just something normal

Her eye doesn't look quite right so I think it is definitely worth getting it checked out.
Hopefully it is something that can be easily treated, but at least if you see a vet you will get a proper diagnosis.

It's possible that it is just the normal cleaning fluid but there does seem to be rather a lot. I rarely notice it in my 3 (adults). I guess it's possible that there is some sort of inflammation that causes overproduction or prevents it draining properly so it'd be wise to check. I sympathise about the cost - in many ways if I come out the vets having paid to be told 'it's nothing' I feel kinda cheesed off even though I should be celebrating for the sake of my poor healthy pig!

There's a couple of rescues listed in guinea lynx for your state Guinea Lynx :: US Guinea Pig Rescue and Shelter Organizations I don't know whether either are near enough to contact for advice about vets. I have personally found that a reputable rescue uses a reputable vet who therefore sees a LOT of guinea pigs! There is also a different bit on guinea lynx where they have vet listings by state if you need one... Guinea Lynx :: GL's Vet List

We went to the vet and she said it should be ok and gave me eye drops to put in 3 times a day

Good that you have your piggy seen promptly!

These will be the antibiotic eye drops that are needed to get on top of any infection. In order to support the healing process, you can apply plain tear drops or gel after the antibiotic ons, but you need to wait at least 30 minutes for the antibiotic to be fully absorbed. The extra eye hydration will make the eye more comfortable and speed up the healing process but it is not a medication and therefore not prescribed.

Gently pull down the lower eyelid and aim the drops into the gap if you can. It is generally a bit of a fumble; especially with an uncooperative piggy.
