Hi, i have a good size two story outside hutch with a weather cover I have lined it all with Lino. I currently use wood shavings but I really don't like the stuff and I hate the mess its making of my house and garden I'm having to Hoover at least twice a day as it all gets walked in :(
My 3 baby boars love to hide and play under a towel the wood shavings just stick to my piggies long coats and the towel...horrid.
I had already brought a large roll of thick vetbed fleece after reading many reviews this was to use in their bedroom and upstairs landing but my vet says don't use it because the fibres could get eaten by my boys and harm them :(
I really like the idea of lining the whole hutch with fleece blankets like the ones that are used in the c&c cages because they are not messy and they last (I don't mind the washing of them) I think this could work with Velcro then have a proper vet bed just in their bedroom with a towel for them to sleep under....what do you think?

I would really like to use a cost effective bedding, with little if no mess is that possible in an outside hutch?

I used an outside double story hutch with attached run but I had it inside on top of a tile floor in my computer room. The bottom was completely open. I used a washable mattress protector, PVC backed so waterproof, & terry towelling on top so absorbent, in all parts of the hutch & vetbed on top in all parts. The mattress protectors can be cut to size & I found a single size gave enough to cover the top part of the hutch & the entire bottom area. I had that hutch for 3 years. I finally found a commercial cage big enough for my liking (1 metre x 1 metre) that I could also put on a table & I still use the mattress protector & vetbed. My boys have never eaten the vetbed.

For their floor time run, which is very large, has no bottom & sits on wood flooring, I use rubber mats (for softness) + the same type of mattress protector + fleece. I use fleece only because it's cheaper for the size I want & they are not in the run as long as they are in their hutch/cage.

Daily poop pickups & a weekly wash of all fabric items is all the upkeep I need do. Don't have to clean floors or cage bottoms. No loose bedding kicked or falling out all over the place.

Where is the best place to buy fleece from? Any tips on how to tell if its good eg going to last i really don't have much of a clue what I'm looking for , I've had a look at all the fab c&c cages photos on here there are some amazing set ups :) I think my boys would be better on the fleece too if I could house them inside I would, I think fleece would work in an outside hutch.

Id love to have my 4 inside in a c&c cage but until we move house I have absolutely no room :(

Mine have newspaper and then fleece and then lots of hay to keep them warm as they are outside. They also have cardboard boxes stuffed with a mix of hay and a little bit of straw to keep them off of the floor and warm. I get my fleece blankets from Poundland, they are the perfect size to line the cage floors.

I then shake the blankets out every day to get rid of the poops and wash them once a week or when they are wet to get rid of the wee :)

Hi Kerry, that's perfect thank you very much it's nice to hear of someone using fleece in their outside hutch and it being ok for the piggie :)
I will pop to poundland next time in the city and give it a go (i live in a village), I have a fleece pod (I can not think what it's called lol) that did sleep in I will pop that back in once they are better.
