Hi ! I have noticed a sign about my guinea. When she is eating she picks up The pellet she tilts her head Back holding it in mouth as if she does Not know How to swallow it, but she is not choking on it Just like helping herself to swallow. I looked at her teeth and everything looks okay. Should I be worred because it has been happening for two days only.

Does she end up chewing and swallowing the nugget? Are the nuggets particularly large maybe or have you noticed this issue when she’s eating other things aswell?

Has she lost any weight since last week? If you have any concerns about potential struggle to eat, it would be best to change to daily weighing to keep an eye on this.

I hope it’s nothing too serious! x

HI! We were at vets yesterday and it was an abscess on the jaw near the tooth at the back. She got antibiotics for it so we are trying to get better this way. However she seems to be eating much less and I am scared about her not eating hay: I have been syringe feeding her with instant food for guinea pigs from vet, but do you have any tips on how to help her eat more?

I’m sorry to hear that.
Has she also got painkillers?

She is unlikely to eat more independently until she is feeling better. In meantime you must syringe feed her a minimum of 60ml per day.
Please make sure you weigh her every morning so you can know you are getting enough syringe feed into her each day to keep her weight stable.
