I need some advice please. Peewee has been poorly for the last week. He was hunched up not eating last weekend. He started eating/drinking by himself by Sunday but not back to normal. So he went to the vet Tues and she couldn’t find anything particular wrong, and went with gut stasis. He’s had critical care food and Emeprid. He has been eating and drinking and his poops were looking better, but they keep looking small/tear shaped again.
This morning my daughter recorded him making strange squeaking/snorting noises.
I can’t figure out how to add the videos on here. In one he sounds like someone lightly squeezing a squeaky toy on each breath, in the other he’s snuffling and honking a bit like a goose. He’s quiet now.
Does it sound like he’s now developed respiratory illness?

I meant to add, he’s also licking us a lot when he’s being held. In case that means anything.

:agr: Please do get him seen by a vet again if you are now seeing further symptoms

In addition, ensure you switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh him every day at the same time every day. This is the only way to know whether he is really eating enough hay for himself/getting enough syringe feed

Good luck. Hope the vets can get to the bottom of the problem. ❤️

Thank you.
Why is it always at the weekend :( Our vet isn’t open weekends.

It’s always the way, sadly.
You can call your normal practice phone number and their answer phone should give you the details of the out of hours service covering your area

Vets here are open Saturdays and evenings. But my few months ago emergency was bank holiday Monday. The piggies seem to know when the vets close.

Well he’s seemed fine today after this mornings odd noises. He seems happy hanging out with me downstairs, ate up some greens and some hay and had a snooze. He’s still quiet when he’s back in his home with Charlie, he’s mostly sitting in his hidey, but his breathing seems fine? Appetite not great still.
He hasn’t really been himself since we went away in August and they went back to the rescue for the fortnight. He lost weight and never really regained it.

I’m glad he seems a bit better. But if you’re at all worried I’d always advise getting them checked over at the vets just in case as they hide their illnesses so well. ❤️

We've been back to the vets again this week as he is getting worse with not eating and obviously losing weight. Different vet, but couldn't find any illness, chest clear, so still treating for gut stasis.
He will hardly eat his critical care food. I don't how to get more of it down him. The Emprid didn't seem to make any difference last week, but we've got more of that.
Where he was eating greens last week he's not interested in eating anything at all now :( not sure what to do?

No, just CC food and Emprid. He doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort, just not eating.

Husband just managed to get about 6ml down him, he's better at being a bit more forceful with it (sounds terrible, not in a bad way!). I only managed about 2ml earlier. Husband got about 6ml this morning. Before, he was eating some greenery, but now he sniffs it or picks a bit up then gives up. He just tried to eat a bit of dandelion, and it took several minutes to manage to chew it into his mouth. We waited a while then gave his emeprid, and the bit of leaf fell back out, so he can't seem to eat. The vet says he can't see any problem with his teeth.

Usually being hunched up is a sign of pain. One of our boys is always hunched but has no obvious source of pain per all of the tests we’ve run. However, he had a similar issue to yours and we’ve got him on pain meds, and he’s doing quite well. It may be some arthritis, etc. I’d definitely see if treating him for pain may help. Our boy is on Metacam and Gabapentin.

Dropping food is often a sign of dental problems and these are almost impossible to diagnose without a full mouth examination which generally needs to be done under anaesthesia.
There are a few very experienced vets who can do this with an awake guinea pig but these are few and far between.
At this point I would be asking how experienced with guinea pigs your current vets are?

Has the vet fully checked your pigs mouth like the above commenter suggested? I definitely think it could be that it’s some kinda dental thing causing these symptoms!

The first vet didn't look properly as Peewee had food in the back of his mouth, but said she couldn't see any signs on his other teeth or inside his mouth.
The second vet said he had food at the back but he flushed his mouth out so he could see the back teeth properly and says his back teeth all look good to him. I know the second vet is quite a senior one there, he's been there years, but no I don't know how much of a guinea pig expert he is.
Peewee didn't have the chewing problem until a week after the loss of appetite got worse. He was happily eating greens and a few nuggets before.
I will get the vet to triple check his teeth though.

I would take him back to vet I took my piggies to the vet last Month and he was doing the same as you pig not eating and drinking much and making wired noises at first they said he was fine but ik he was not alright so I went back the next day and they checked over again and started treating him for a respiratory infection witch he sound bounced back to his normal self but when I took him to the vet for second time and asked to see someone different she told me that he would not of made it threw the night if he was not seen that day it breaker my heart that I could have lost him and that vet did not do her job probably xx

It's so hard getting this syringe food into him. He battles me then climbs as close to my chin as possible because he knows I can't get to his face when he's that close!
