help! new owner

She will need to be seen by a vet. It’s possible it’s a haypoke injury but only a vet can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

Does she live with another guinea pig? Guinea pigs are highly social herd animals and must always be kept in pairs to prevent loneliness

Hi and welcome!

A sudden squint is a symptom for either something stuck under an eyelid or for an eye injury (hay pokes, especially from stiff timothy hay) are a very common hazard). Please have her vet checked asap as eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly but also heal a lot easier and without any trouble the sooner they are seen and treated appropriately with antibiotic eye drops as prescribed by your vet according to the severity of the issue.
Vets have a special dye that will show up the extent of the injury under UV light. Eye treatment and medication is the same for all spet species, so you do not need to wait for an exotics appointment. A local general vet you can see soonest will do.

All the best!

hello! this is day two of her eye. i am having trouble determining if this is the healthy cleaning discharge or something else. below is the picture89839F08-C5A0-48EC-979A-52556058B634.webp54EE91CB-19FF-4905-AC73-B29803B7E42B.webp

:agr:

It may well be cleaning fluid but the fact she was squinting would mean a vet check is still a good idea. Nothing can ever replace a hands on vet check!

should i try to clean the eye for her?

Hi!

It looks to me more like ulceration gunk from an infected eye injury (which can come from something wedged under a lid and not just a hay poke) rather than not reabsorbed milky white cleaning fluid due to a blocked tear duct, which would be whiter and milkier than the slightly greyish and slightly transparent ulceration.

Please see a vet as eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly.

You can gently clean off the gunk with a damp cloth.

I agree - that is not a normal amount of cleaning fluid and the consistency is more in line with an eye injury.

If she was recently purchased you should keep all receipts as the pet shop may pay if a vet states she had the injury when you bought her.
However most important is that she sees a vet asap to prevent the injury becoming worse and her ending up potentially loosing her eye.
