Hello just after a bit of advice that I cant find in a book I got from the library :-\

Two days ago I bought a 6 weed old sow for my daughter and for the first day she hid in her cage just looking at us as if she was lonely and wouldnt eat or drink :'( today she has come out a bit more and is eating and drinking but has started to stand in her food tray and wee and poo in there :-X is there something I should do to stop her or will she stop doing it on her own ?

Also, I feel really guilty splitting her up from her brother but obviously cant have them both as they will have little babies which I'm not ready for ? but hadnt realised how sociable they are until I read it in a book, will she be ok on her own or would you recommend getting another sow (dont want her to be lonely :'(), it would have to be another litter and I know a breader who has 2 week old babies so they should be ready by next month or will she be just fine on her own and I'm just being soft ::)

Thanks :)

Hiya and welcome! :)

Yep they are better in pairs. To be honest at this time of year rescuse are crying out for good owners to take in pigs. Maybe you could get your little sow a neutered boar that is a little older? You can take your sow to a rescue and she can pick a neutered boar or another sow for herself. :)

Good luck!

Yeah I think I'd try her with another sow in a short while - especially as she's so young herself. She will be shy to start off with but the more you handle her then the more confident she'll become with you. This is a really helpful forum with lots of people with stacks of GP info and knowledge and tips. Good luck O0

thanks for the replies will take them on board, will have a read over the forum for some tips, I didnt have to take an antihistamine today so my immune system must be getting used to little 'Sparkle' now :)

hey, the pooping in the food dish doesnt stop lol one of my boys is over a year old and the other is approx 3 1/2 months ansd they both poop in their dry food! ::)

i would get her a friend as shes so young, and they are sociable..

Agree with the above :) Mine poop and wee in their bowls sometimes too, just one of those things!

I have emailed a couple of rescue centres so waiting for them to get back to me so hopefully can get a little play mate for her :smitten:

I chopped up fresh carrots and put it in the plastic tray (that came with the cage) next to the dry tray and she has eaten all of it and left a couple of poo's in its place so I take it she enjoyed it ;D

Unfortunately they sometimes have no differentiation between where to eat and where to wee or poo. My boy doesnt even get up to wee, preferring to soak his tummy instead ;D

Your little girl will be much happier with another friend to play with but please help a rescue pig if you can. There are so many loveable pigs out there that have no homes :smitten:
