Hi everyone a little bit of advice is needed from you experts.
Our 10 week old boar has a poorly eye.
Bought them Sunday tea time.
Left eye on Tue night started to look like it was closing a little. No discharge other wise the eye looks fine.
In himself he is fine, eating drinking, chatting, running around popcorning etc. Cage not in a draughty place. When bought he was on wood shavings, I moved him into fleece after the eye problem.
Only thing I could think of if he's pricked it with some hay?
I've been bathing it x4 daily with cooled boiled water and its still no better.
The eye just looks lots more closed and not like the other open healthy eye. Again still no discharge or anything crusty, nothing covering or in the eye....not that I can see and he's a good piggy so he does keep still for me to look.
Any idea's ?
If not its going to have to be a trip to the vets ?
Many thanks everyone x

Thank you butterfly88, I will have a look now x

I think it looks like a hay poke, and it may be that it is in the eyelid so you can't see it. Best to get it checked by a vet, they can put a green dye in too and check for damage. If it is a hay poke he will be given a course of drops and maybe some pain relief. The vet should also be able to rule out something like Conjunctivitis or a URI. Great that he is bright in himself.

I agree with @helen105281. I would get that checked by a vet as soon as possible. We are plagued by eye problems here, having had hay pokes, conjunctivitis, ulcers, over growing conjunctiva etc. definitely best to let the vets check for ulceration/injury and give drops for whatever is needed. Good to hear that he is otherwise well.

Thank you so much Vicki & Helen,
Yeh a trip to the vets is probably best....I will let you know how we get on !
Thanks again x

Hi there &welcome to the forum.

It sounds as if he may have a foreign body in it or maybe a hay poke injury.

Bathing with the boiled cooled water is ok for a temporary measure until u can see a vet. U can even add a pinch of salt to Disolve in it. But the vet will be able to give him eye drops to help it heal up &stop any infection (usually Tiacil or Fucalthmic? Spelling?).

Eyes are fragile &any damage to them can spiral out of control with complications really quickly.

A vet will be able to give painkilling drops to check under the eyelid making sure no grass seeds have gone under his eyelid &now scratching the eyeball making it ulcerate &very painful. Usually an orange/yellow dye is added to the eye to check for damage.

Good luck at the vets &let us know how he gets on. Xx

Edit I started writing this during my break & the thread hadn't updated so some of it is duplicated with other posts.
Healing vibes xx

Hi all a little update ....from last week.
We did have a trip to the vets and she said our new piggy had a touch of conjunctivitis..so we have isathal cream
( Fucithalmic ) to apply twice daily in both eyes.
Thanks everyone for the advice, it is always worth getting our little fury friends checked out by a vet
