My guinea pig was ill 4 days back, he suddenly stopped eating and moving therefore we force fed him. He recovered very well and even was playing around. Yesterday suddenly he stopped using his fore limbs, to which the vet thought was just a sprain
He was eating well but dragging his body. Today morning he stopped moving and moving his limbs but was eating well. We took him to the vet immediately which he is unable to diagnose and gave multivitamin and antibiotics. There isn't any good vet available in the place we live. Now it looks like he is having fits, he has stopped eating and is lethargic. He have twitching movements continuously. There's involuntary movement of the mouth too ( he opens and shuts at intervals) it has become impossible to force feed him now. Though he started moving with the limbs now but rarely .. please help I don't know what to do .. I love him a lot ..I can't loose him

Please keep your boyas comfortable as possible and warm, but not hot. If you possible, take him to the vet to be gently put to sleep if your vet is prepared to see him as an emergency. Sadly, it sounds like you boy's body is breaking down but in a rather painful and distressing way.

Loss of movement in the front legs is very rare. I have only witnessed it once, in the couple of days immediately before I lost a piggy of mine to heart failure. I had to rush him for euthanasia in the middle of night as his passing was sadly not pain-free but he was no longer able to process any medication.

Sometimes this is sadly the most loving, but equally heart-breaking gift we can give a beloved pet to cut short any suffering. It is very upsetting when there is nothing you can do to help. :(

Please do not feel bad; you are obviously a very caring owner and are doing all your can do!

The vet here don't do this. He is in my arms right now he has started moving and walking all by himself but now he is dragging his head
Is there not a single percent chance that he may live he has started walking now. I would do anything if there is even 1% chance

All you can do is to keep him as comfortable as possible and ride the tiger.

He may survive this one, but there is a high chance that he will have more fits.

There is unfortunately not much a vet can do in this situation, especially not a general vet with little experience with guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are small and frail animals when it comes down to it; because of their huge personalities we tend to forget that. Sadly even though vet care has made huge strides in the last few years, it is still limited when it comes to small pets. Concentrate on quality of life rather than quantity. I am well aware that this is not what you want to hear, but there is unfortunately not a miracle cure for you. If there was, I would have told you! :( :( :(

It is always extremely hard to accept that a beloved pet may die; and it is hugely distressing for everybody to go through what you are currently going through. You are doing your best; even if that is very limited. Your boy knows how much he is loved and cherished, and that makes a huge difference for him, believe me! ;)

Having grown up with guinea pigs at a time where there were very few vets with even minimal knowledge, I have always found the feeling of helplessness in the face of suffering and distress the hardest to cope with. I still do when a piggy of mine is going downhill, and there is nothing I or a vet can do. :(

Oh my you poor thing having to witness this. Your piggie has left for the great RAINBOW WORLD and your voice smell love were the last heard and felt. Be very very proud of that RIP DEXY You will be missed and loved

I’ve just caught up with this thread. So sorry lovely little Dexy has passed over the rainbow bridge. Popcorn free little one. You’ll be very much missed but your mummy did everything she could for you.
Big massive hugs  x

He is no more now. I love my dexy a lot and may he always be happy in another world

I am so very sorry!

Your description sounded to me like Dexy was already in the middle of multiple organ failure. Towards the end guinea pigs can experience fitting when their limbs and body are becoming oxygen starved; sometimes it can be prolonged unfortunately. It is very upsetting to watch for any loving owner but thankfully most guinea pigs are rather out of it by then. :(

Please try to take comfort that Dexy could leave carried by the wings of your love. That has made it a lot easier for him!

You are welcome to post a tribute to him in our Rainbow Bridge section if or whenever it feels right for you and you wish to. We all grieve differently. Some of us find that it helps them to talk about their loss, others prefer to wait until they have come to terms with it and some find it simply too distressing to go there. It is there for whoever would like to make use of it at whichever time!

I couldn't agree more. What a wonderful person you are. Having lost 2 piggies in 8 weeks your words and well wishes really helped me through a difficult time.

I still find the days difficult but it's early days yet xx
