I have recently been looking into adopting a guinea pig and I called a Pets at home and was told that they have a male guinea pig up for adoption but that he had to be separated from his brother because they were fighting. I am really stuck as I have been told many times that guinea pigs are social and should be kept in pairs or more but I wouldn’t want to get the male and another guinea pig and for them to fight. Please can someone help!

Character compatibility is the most important part of a successful bond - two piggies must like each other to be able to form a functioning hierarchy. So, just because he fell out with his brother doesn’t mean he can’t get along with another piggy. However, If you take on a single piggy then you are taking on a lot of responsibility. You will need to find him a character compatible friend and that is best done via dating at a rescue centre as that way he can choose his own new friend so you will be assured of a successful bond. What you cant do is just go and buy another piggy from a pet shop, put them together (following the correct bonding procedure) and expect it to all be ok. If you just buy another piggy then there is a chance they won’t like each other, will fight and then you’ll end up with two single piggies.

they are social animals though and they do need to be kept in pairs. You need to be aware that you can Only keep two boars together. If you attempt to keep three or more boars together, then you are highly likely to end up with fights and separated piggies.

If this is your first time owning piggies, then I would strongly recommend you do not get this single piggy and instead register your details with a rescue centre. They can then find you a suitable, well bonded pair which will mean you aren’t taking on the risks and uncertainty of potential bond problems as well as having to bond piggies yourself.

Do be aware that two boars need a lot of room. They need a cage measuring 6ft x 2ft (180cm x 60cm) and that the majority of commercial cages available in pet shops are not big enough for a boar pair.
