Hi
I have a long haired Guinea pig, he's about 2 and 3/4,he had to go to vets to have an abscess drained that was on his back that came up out of the blue. The vet lanced the abscess on Friday, and started him on abx, baytril, half a ml for 5 days, prior to the vets, he had been off his food for a day or so, not pooing or weeing much. Now 3 days later he is still showing no interest in food and nothing coming out. Do I need to contact vet again tomorrow? I'm giving him water by syringe as well as the abx, but not sure what else to do, he's very quiet and disinterested in anything. Any suggestions for me to do? Thanks.

Your piggy needs to be syringe fed either mushed up pellets or a recovery feed such as critical care. If he isn’t eating anything for himself, you need to syringe feed around the clock aiming for 60-90mls in a 24 hour Period. You will need to weigh him daily to ensure he isn’t losing weight and if he is, then he isn’t being syringe fed enough.

Please do also contact an out of hours vet now

If he hasn’t eaten since and hasn’t been pooping, then he hasn’t had enough food likely since and could need help with his guts with medication. Syringe feeding prevents them from shutting down. Syringing water won’t offer any fibre so won’t keep the guts functioning normally.

keep an eye on the wound as often draining an abscess isn’t enough and it can just come back. They often need the whole capsule to be surgically removed and flushed daily to allow it to heal from the inside out
