Help I need advice quick... I have 2 girls who I brought inside last Sunday against my oh wishes .... they are in a room with the door shut and an air purifier on with snowflake chips and hay but both my hubby and daughter can smell them as soon as they walk in the front door. my smell isn't very good but I can once in the room. my big promise was they wouldn't smell . ... what can I do? they only came in sun nite so it's been 2 days. I hadnt therefore cleaned them yet was going to do that every 3rd day... I used fleece when they came in thru the raining days in summer on the floor and that smelt after 2 outings so thought woodchip would be better as it has a woody smell to start with ... pleas any suggestions I really don't want them back out but will have to if can't sort this

Have you tried the scented wood shavings? You can buy those at pets at home which helped my stinky boars when they were bonding :) Also might be worth using just paper which you can change really quickly and easily :) hope this helps :)

What do they smell of exactly? The only time mine smelt was towards the end of poor Tilly's life when she had unrinary problems.

I clean Hettie out twice a day and never smell anything.

I find a H .E. P. A air filter with a carbon filter incorporated very useful keeping smells to a minimum , and just as important
It keeps dust to a minimum .
Tip ! If you do get one , cut a peice of cotton bed sheet to the size of the frount of the filter and it will double the time between
Cleaning !

Are you sure they really do smell and they're not just saying that? It's probably the woodshavings or hay they can smell. I changed the cage every other day when using woodshavings or finacard (Tues, Thurs and Sun)...by the 2nd day there can be a slight whiff at the end where they pee most but only noticeable when walking past the cage.

I have a 2 storey cage and use fleece with pampers/huggies bed mats under and upstairs on top i have puppy pads with megazorb. The downstairs never smells i don't think as they spend more time up top but i upstairs i find a good thick depth of megazorb is key. I use a good 3" depth at least.

Also what helps is a big cage with as many fleecy beds and hideys as you can fit in there - this helps absorb a lot of their smells rather than it all concentrating in one area of the cage. For example, if you notice they do wee a lot in set areas, put a fleecy on top which can be lifted and changed regularly. Any smell is likely from pee rather than poop.

Mine are in the kitchen and we can't smell them at all. Either that or we are nose blind!:bal::bal::cen:

My sense of smell is awful ... I can smell them when I pick them up . like a slight doggie smell before they have a wash. I could bath them a bit but they don't look dirty at all and I expect a smell on them ... after all they fur... mine are long haired but I do cut them. thr

Wish we were all nose blind !aww I loved having thenough inside for what 4 days now but my oh isn't having any of it. he wants them in the garage which us attached to the house so I suppose I can still go in there lots... but with my coat on cos it's freezing! if only I had a bit of time to try other things but he's putting his foot down I think

I use carefresh on the parts we here they go to the toilette most. It's really good at soaking up the wee and making smells less strong. You could also spot clean your guineapigs cage everyday so just clearing out the parts where they go to the toilet to keep it as clean as possible

Just tell him they are staying indoors! Your home as well as his!

If i smell guinea urine i sneeze, i use fitch in their litter trays and change every other day and no smells. I always ask my friend who comes round weekly to be honest if the guineas smell and they have been fine and only smelt once in 6 months, we have 6 in our living room.

If you don't have time to try new things you could just change them daily. It sounds to me that he isn't going to accept them no matter what you do, which is really sad.

I brought my piggies indoors and also said of they smell they will have to go back out. I only ever smell them when I stick my head in their cage. I change them every 4-5 days but I sweep through once maybe twice a day just to keep it tidy, they are on puppy pads then just some cheap fleeces from b&m. their litter tray is change every day too.
Do u have litter trays because if it's the wee you can smell they might be a good idea x

Also I find the beds they sleep in smell more than the actually cage fleece etc so I wash them every 2 days x

Hi gizzy thanks for that ... I have just got an air purifier its an aironic 40W pro true HEPA air purifier ioniser.... and did ask someone who had bough one if it helped with pet smell.... seems it does but cant say its totally taken mine away. I don't mind the smell once in the room ..... but then they are my pets and I am an animal lover ... both of which he isn't. maybe I'm just expecting too much of it as I havnt tried switching it off to see the difference either

if you use fitch in the litter trays.... what do you use for the rest ... is it a C&C cage you have inside ?

I think you have hit the nail on the head there JenniferG... I was dreading this all happening , I am heartbroken really as I have grown to love the little things.... to be honest I don't even see the garage working in the long run

You need to explain to him that guinea pigs are not hardy enough to live outside in the winter unless in a well insulated outbuilding of some kind...and that he wouldn't want any harm to come to them, would he?

this is going to be a bit long winded but with little time before I have to move them, if I try fleece can I just put cuts of fleece over newspaper and puppy pads ? I wasn't going to do fleece on the thought that through the summer when I brough them into the utility on the floor that was on fleece and by day 2 it smelt ... and even when washed now there isn't that freshness about it . is it white vinegar you can use to pre soak ? they look clean and are washed at 60 but have that guinea pig aroma on them still.... again I don't mind it but when your trying to keep the smells away you will do anything. I would clean every other day if need be but then it will be an issue with using the washing machine too much ! that's why I thought the snowflake softchip ( healther form of wood chip)... would sented help though I was advised this was better for them if I could get it and its a lot cheeper as sold for horses... but could use the sented and this ? I don't know as you can read I'm in a mad panic and totally confussed... ps I do have a litter tray but its not being used very much ... they don't seem to have a specific spot except in their houses where I will try and change the softchip every day

I have tried to explain that one and he actually quoted from this forum that some had posted that they are hardy creatures and quite happy living outside as long as there are no drafts ... even finding a post which said they can run and jump in the snow though they don't actually know what it is ? that really didn't help my case

Carefresh might be better but it's expensive and has a particular smell of it's own. You can use Dettol laundry cleanser to remove the bacteria and the smell from fleece.

I had someone telling me they were hardy as well, and I don't think there's get any insulation for their hutch...in the next breath he that sometimes they find a dead one!

That is really annoying...I think you need to show him an official site about caring for guinea pigs.

I think for your own sake as well as the guinea pigs, you need to put your foot down and insist that they remain inside. Sometimes, there comes a point when we need to make a stand.

I was worried that my piggy, Umi, would smell so I put a little tree car air freshener near his cage and I couldn't smell him. The air freshener was a very strong smell though and that might be worse than the piggy.

OK. ... anyone had any experience of deodorising sprays for guinea pigs? just picked one up from pets at home... their own make. mine are long haired and although have a slight odour about them when your cuddling them they don't look dirty ...and ones white. so I used this. they smell absolutely gorgeous now. really clean and fresh. they didn't seem to mind it too much .... I put them both in loads of towels after to snuggle in and kept them warm as they did look a little wet haired. just wondered as this is specifically for guinea pigs and small animals... it will be OK to use won't it... and how often can I use it? was thinking every 2 to 3 months... they both had a good coat cut too as at the moment at least they are indoors

Another thing to do if they smell is to give them a bath. I use medium-warm water and Suave kids 3 in 1 shampoo, conditioner, soap. If they are long haired, brush their fur when your done. Hope this helps!
