Please help, I am unsure what they are or how to treat them. I noticed very small brown little things moving on one of my guinea pigs. He has a crest on the top of his head and I can see them moving around the skin there. I've looked at the rest of him but can't see them anywhere else (I'm assuming they are but moving away from where I'm looking). Havent seem any on the other piggie but I assume he would have them too.

Should I take them to the vet or is there something I can buy to treat them.

Thank you

Also ill just add i got them July time from someone who no longer wanted them. At the time 1 was a year and 1 was about 4 or 5 months. I took them to a local vet for reassure they were healthy and said about their itching but were given a clean bill of health. As I'm new to piggies i just thought they were a scratchy species, now I'm thinking its the mites/fleas this whole time! Can't believe it feel terrible. I live near the cat and rabbit vet in Northampton so will try to book them in there. Trouble is I've got to wait in for my husbands motorbike delivery tomorrow so will have to be Saturday if they are open.

Is there anything I should take note of or mention to the vet when I speak to them?

Hi

Please have your piggys vet checked. We can only guess without having hands-on access to your piggy - and if we guess wrongly, then it can be very harmful. Seeing a vet also means that you get the appropriate strength of the treatment you need and not the low dosed stuff that is sold in pet shops that is ultimately a waste of money because it can at the best only temporarily suppress but not sort out the problem.

You can find more information on guinea pig skin parasites via this link here: New Guinea Pig Problems: Sexing & Pregnancy; URI, Ringworm & Parasites; Vet Checks & Customer Rights

Good luck. The treatment for parasites is quite cheap and they are easy to sort out. If you phoned the vet they may prescribe the treatment if you have seen the parasite and can describe it. Both piggies will need to be treated at the same time. ❤️

You are doing the right thing taking them to the vet. The Cat and Rabbit clinic in Northampton is considered to be one of the best piggy vets in the UK. :)

I rang the cat and rabbit but not taking on new clients. She was very helpful though. I'm gona try ringing them monthly just to register them there! Wish I knew that I would have done it a while ago. Nevermind. She said I could try a prescription strength treatment called stronghold (sure that what she said). Obs id have to request it from the vet I saw when I got them.

I'm close to the vets4pets in Leicester thats on the list. Has anyone got good experiences there?

That vets4pets aren't taking on new clients either. The others are too far for me to travel. I'm worried they are gona have to go back to that other vet.

Just to keep everyone updated. I got them into another local vet (not the same as before) but can't get in till Tues morning! She said to phone Monday at 8.30 to see if I can get an app for mon instead but feel like I'm not doing enough. Bless them, they've got wait more days before treatment!

Just thought I'd update incase anyone reading this thread.

I managed to get them into the vet today. She confirmed it was lice (she caught one with tape) and gave advocat. So I gave them a dose today and again in 2 weeks. Will clean them out fully tomorrow and twice weekly till they are all dosed up. Hopefully this will get rid of them.
