Hi everyone,

I have rushed my guinea pig to the emergency clinic last night when I noticed how cloudy her eye was and that she had a slight head tilt.

The vet was preoccupied with a rabbit that had come in and gave my poor Lily very poor attention, it was extremely frustrating.

Anyway, the vet said she thinks that it is the start of glaucoma.. she recommended she starts taking some medication so we have her on:
1. Sandoz Azithromycin
2. Tobrex
3. Metacam

Have any of you had any experience regarding this ? I have attached a photo for your reference. Also, just so you know she is 5 and a half

I’m sorry that the vet was preoccupied. It could be a hay poke rather than glaucoma in which case a course of eye drops given daily should clear. Apart from the metacam, I’m not sure what the medications you have been prescribed are. Is one an antibiotic eye drop? Of course, I am not a vet though so your vets diagnosis may well be correct but whenever I have had a pig with hay poke, it has looked similar to your piggies eye

I’m sorry she wasn’t paid the attention she needed. You can always get her checked out by another vet for a second opinion. Remember eye treatment is the same so she can be seen by a general vet. Hope she’s better soon.

My girl got an ulcerated eye after hay poke. The vet removed a seed head from her eye when she was seen. She was given eye drops for a week. Her eye looked a little like your girl’s.910AB87C-FDF0-4CC0-9567-F2A975232586.webp

yes with all saying like others .VET gave me TERRAMYCIN..spread around the eyes if there is some HAY or other tiny stuff in eye it will slide out.or. i used a tweezer like and held BEAR in towel and took it out slowly, and also used a solution called TOBRAMYACIN ..for a few days .METACAM also for discomfort...Hope that help...I dislike the fact of your Piggie being ignored by VET...very SAD....

Did the vet look into the eye properly and use drops to check for a scratch or ulcer?
The drops are usually a bright green/yellow colour and show up small injuries under a special light.
If he did that and ruled out injury then that is a positive thing.

I know which test you mean one of my hamsters had that done to him. Unfortunately I am not sure what the vet did because due to Covid we were made to wait in our car while she was being examined, the vet kept her in for 2 hours and in the meantime did not give us any update.. when she gave her back to us she just said it was the start of glaucoma but that otherwise she seemed well. She pretty much just gave her back to us and rushed off.. I have asked them to send me her file today so I will check that one but I don't think so.. she was really not a priority yesterday. I will book her in for a different vet.

I would definitely get another opinion (or at least make sure that injury was ruled out before they jumped to glaucoma!) It kind of worries me that they were rushed and may not have ruled out the simplest option before making another diagnosis.

Sorry the vet didn’t give you proper attention.
I would be tempted to see another vet as well and rule out hay poke or some other injury.
Poor piggy.
Hope everything mends quickly

Hey everyone,

I have booked her in for an appointment with another vet for next friday (it was the soonest they could see her)
I will post a message here once I hear back. I went over the sheet of the exams performed it seems they checked her eye pressure and it was all normal so I am surprised to see the vet thinks it would be the start of glaucoma?

I would keep calling them and see if a cancellation opens up - next Friday is such a long time to wait for an eye injury

:agr: Is this a general vet or exotic vet?

Hi everyone, the white dot in the center of her eye has disappeared now it is only the cloudy blue shade. She seems a bit more lively too so perhaps it was a hay poke ?
The vets here are all so difficult to get appointments with it is so strange. Since leaving the UK we have really been struggling with the way things are handled here. I will try another general vet but even they have limited slots most dont take on new patients which is crazy to me.. thats the reason we had to take her to the emergency vet which was an hour away

Hey everyone Lilys eye is sooo much better I'm soo happy! I take her to the exotic vet this friday but she is lively again and the eye colour is returning to normal ! I reallt wonder what caused it.. maybe it really was a hay poke !
