I have bought a large plastic cage to be used over winter in my daughters playhouse ( My hutch is too big to bring in) i am unsure what to use to keep them warm, in the hutch i fill their house part with hay and they have a cosy warmer at night, what can i use in a cage and what to use on teh floor would they be ok on hay, they have a little wooden cottage in their hutch but this doesnt seem really big enough for them to sleep ina nd keep warm any ideas please

Hay is really good for keeping them warm as long as you give them plenty of it (fill some boxes to the brim for them to surround themselves in hay)

You can also put a blanket or carpet over the cage at night to keep out draughts and chills as piggies are susceptible to cold draughts.

In really cold icy weather, you might want to use some form of heating - I am sure some other members will be along to say which is suitable and I know heat pads are available for the piggies too.

Also - your piggies will be more robust if they have been outside all year (it sounds as if they have)

To move them from indoor to outdoor doesn't give them time to acclimatise and grow a warmer coat.

Mine live indoors but it gets quite cold in the house when the heating is off... And as much as I love my boys, I simply cannot afford the leave the central heating on for them all day while I'm at work! I've just bought them a Snuggle Safe heat pad for their Christmas present (or whenever it gets cold enough to break it out).

If there's room, maybe get them a bigger house or a second one so they each have a sheltered place to snuggle up, if you think the current one is too small.

Hay is probably the best thing for it though, and I'd second the idea of covering the cage at night or in extra cold weather.
