Hi there, today i layed with my guinea pig and put her on a towel and fed her a few treats, she did a wee and started to walk about, she seemed herself. then she did a wee and poo and blood came out with it

should i take her to the vets or something or is it her period

she is one year old and a month. she just got over cystitis about a month ago.

she isnt making any signs of pain but someone please reply if you have experience or know anything

thanks from amy

It wouldn't be her period, guinea pigs don't bleed like humans. I think I'd be inclined to get her to the vet as soon as you can. It could be a bladder stone, but l'm not qualified to say.

Ok could it be signs of not being able to reproduct anymore? shes acting fine :)

Please get her to the vet ASAP. Piggies should NOT bleed from their back end, no matter what. It is a sign that something is very wrong and she needs to be treated at the vet as an emergency.

Where about are you situated? There must be an emergency out of hours vet near you.

Hi, these are the nearest piggy savvy vets to you. If you ring one of them they should give you an out of hours contact if they aren't open:

Please have her seen by a vet asap! Sows do not bleed when they are in season. It is most likely that your sow has got a urinary tract infection for which she needs an antibiotic, but your vet should also check the reproductive tract.

ok thanks for the replies we will get a vet appointment well try to anyway. i gave her red pepper could it be just the colour coming out the other side many thanks, amy

There should never be red coming from a piggy, she may not have got over her cystitis fully. Red peppers don't make the urine red so it's like another urine infection or potentially bladder stones.

Definitely a vet visit, my piggy had this a few months ago and it was cystitis. My vet prescribed metacam for pain relief (it is quite painful, just like in humans) and baytril for antibiotics.

Hope she's better soon!

Monday is quite a long time away for a piggie in pain :/
And it will be very painful even if it doesn't look like she is acting like she is in pain,
Most vets offer an emergency clinic
Have you phoned them? Or just looked online when they are open?
A lot of vets will say on an automated message that they have an emergency clinch,
Have you tried multiple vets or just one?

I would say Monday is too long away really :/

:agr: Please take her to an emergency vet. Your piggy is in pain. If you have a Pets at Home near you does it have a Vets for Pets? If so they are open when the shop is open so on Sundays its 10am - 4pm I believe. The Consultation fee at my VfP is £34 + any meds you need.

ok thanks :) i will find a vets for pets or try to find one. she looks better than she has ever been at the minute, the bleeding hs sort of stopped but i think that she may have scratched her part because it has stopped, is she passing a stone or something she hasnt been herself really in the last month since her cystitis, anyway thanks for the advice i will get my mum to ring up an emergency vets for the morning. : )

Ideally I would get her seen tonight, especially as she could be in a lot of pain.

The vets4pets near me is currently closed, there is no more bleeding and she is acting herself, we will most likely get her seen tomorrow, she is drinking lots of fluid and has passed her veggies, evreything seems great for now :), the is still chirping and walking around with joy which is great :) thanks for the help. something will be done tomorrow :).

Please have her seen by a vet asap.

A similar thing happened to one of my sows, Ellen. She was passing pure blood.

Thankfully, it turned out to be an infection that a course of antibiotics cleared within a week but my
vet carried out an x ray and ultrasound scan to rule out any bladder / reproductive problems too

Ok :) We have left her normally overnight, we will monitor carefully and see a specialist on Monday, so we can get the best care, until then we will ease everything and not handle her unless urgent :)

Thanks for the help

Also did the blood fro your sow pass when pooing or weeing?

Thanks :)

I strongly recommend seeing a vet before Monday, if she's passing blood then she's in a lot of pain and it's not fair to leave her bleeding and in pain. I would hate to be left for days like that.

I don't mean to be rude or anything I'm just saying it how it is, depending on what it is she could die from it so it's important that you don't just leave her like this.

Yes :) We have seen no signs of bleeding since 2pm and it wasnt heavy luckily, she is eating well and doesnt squeal whe we feel around, is there such thing as a heat? Aparently its something sows get but I'm really not sure,

thabks for the reply :)

Yes sows do come into heat, but they do not bleed. Guinea Pigs hide their illness very well, so she may seem fine, but bleeding is a serious problem and should not wait over the weekend to be sorted.

No it is not heat, females do not pass blood naturally. Only when something is wrong and they need urgent medical treatment.

We think it may of been something really small like passing a stone from her recent cystitis.

  • Blood in urine
  • Squeaking while urinating
  • Squeaking while passing fecal pellets

these can all be signs however she only had one, the blood in urine, this passed in under an hour, she is more active than usual, we think it may of been a quick recover from her last cystitis.

I'm afraid I don't agree, I would have her seen ASAP, but we can only offer you advice. Ultimately it's your decision.

Well who knows? Only a good vet would be able to tell you that. Internet searches aren't a replacement for vet treatment.
